Time for a 2016 update

Need your help. We have lived with this wall far to long. Would love any and all suggestions. We both love the red but, we've had it a long time.
Open dining room, lots of room. I'd love to paint the sideboards too.

Prime the red wall in white. Then look at your decorative objects and pick a new paint color for the room from them. Check your color options against the wood floor, too.

What are you keeping in the room to theme a new color? Chairs, rug??? Perhaps a new arrangement is in order. Can we see all four walls of the space?

Thanks you two. Tried to take pics with I phone! I'm back to my old iPad. I really only have the red rooster. He could be painted too. I have covered our sisal rug with a smaller one.
I could add a colored rug too. Here are all fours seen from dining area. There is a large opening to our living area.
Very open space. I think I jumped on this a little to fast.
Christmas everywhere! Looks a lot different in January.
    Thank you for your input.

OH Beth, I have the same dilemma. I love my big red wall but after 10 years I feel the need for a change. I am veering to a blue grey. Looks like that could work for you too.;)

P.S. It looks like your dog? eats like mine lol.

She drags her food around to the dining room.
I'm at a place I hardly notice! Love the idea of the grey.
I started this thought process, looking at black walls.
Husband put the ka bash on that. Maybe color other than red.
We have had this wall 10 years too. I do love it!

How do you feel about wallpaper?

Have thought about wallpaper. I'm open

I like people who aren't afraid to paint walls red! I like wallpaper too. Murals look great in DRs. I like most of what you own already, but if you want to get rid of the red, go for some other color, and make all 4 walls the same color (or wallpaper pattern). Check out Andrew Martin for very cool wallpaper patterns (http://www.andrewmartin.co.uk/wallpaper-showroom.php).

My other thoughts were that the hanging light fixtures over the table are too big to have 2, and the funny mask would look better mounted on a wall rather than the mirror.

A good exercise is to stand in one spot with a notepad and pencil. Start with one wall/view. Visually edit the "scene", and write down your thoughts, or draw pictures. Do the same as you consider each "view." You'll notice things that muck-up the whole look of the room, even if they're not in the room. Small things like "move the BBQ on the patio out of view" or "trim the brown leaves off the potted plant." Remember to take notes, and breathe! All the little things you note are the details that can be improved to make your good room to a great one. Have fun!

You seem to like rich colors. How about BM Newburg Green? BTW, I know it was years ago but is there any chance your remember the name of the red color?

Oh, you'd have to look at the BM site. I don't like how the samples look on my screen. The color is more blue than green. I fell in love with SW Sea Serpent over the Summer

when I tried it out for my front door. I ended up with a purple door but I am trying to think of a place I can use it. Just between us, I think a black dining room would have been stunning.

    FABULOUS!
    Just sayin

As stunning as the black looks at first glance, I think I would tire of it real quick.

I want a dinning room! I've heard so much about them on Houzz, its the soft sell!

Keenplanner thank you for all of the suggestions. The mask is only on the mirror for Christmas! Otherwise put away for the year!

How many of this thread are there?

It's time to loose the red wall and come up with a more cohesive plan. I was just at Home Depot and they have Ralph Lauren paint in metallic that looks awesome. Since you loved that red wall, I was thinking you might be open to taking such a leap. I'll try to find some pictures of his rooms with the paint and post.
Chook this is my first post and the first one (I thought didn't take) I must have been wrong. Sorry for confusion.
I love the metallic. I could paint the frame on my mirror too.
Funny my red was Ralph Lauren 10 years ago.

I'm going to really think on this, I am convalescing with a broken bone in my foot. I think sitting here looking at the house prompted all of this. You are all so talented and I appreciate so much the input. I will go for it in January.

Beth, close down one of the threads with a link, to the other one.

    How do I do that?

I can't see the silver paint with all your shaker cabinetry and sideboards. You have a lot of golden tones in the adjoining kitchen and your flooring, so I think you have to treat the two spaces as "sisters" and keep with a warmer color in the dining room - maybe gold (perhaps with a ceiling treatment) if you prefer some glitter. Consider painting the pedestals under the table in glossy black to pull from the kitchen counter tops. The background color in the dining chair upholstery might be a source for wall color.

You just need a deep, warm grey, which will compliment the wood.

Could you mention what stays and what goes in the room for inspiration for readers. I feel like I am tossing darts.haha

Be careful with that RL metallic paint. It's a bear to DIY. You'll need to smooth any texture on the wall and it takes some special tools to get the paint to not streak. I agree, you're going to need to be careful I picking your new colors as your kitchen is very warm. I like the idea of wallpaper. It's a rich look.

Instead of black, how about a rich deep inky blue? I think everyone looks better in inky blue rather than black as it's more forgiving and less harsh. Love the idea of doing metallic on the ceiling, or something else unexpected on the ceiling.

Putting metallic paint on a ceiling is not for the faint of heart! It can look fabulous, but it is a horrible DIY, it never looks right, too thin in places, too thick in others, brush or roller marks...I speak from experience. If you really want it, contact a professional decorative painter, it would be worth the money.

Quick update. Thank you for all of the comments. I played with a lot of color and decided on covering the red with Ralph Lauren silver metallic. This is the primer my husband is helping apply. (My delicate hands got roller blisters). We will apply the paint tomorrow. I have ordered a large canvas Big Sur print
To go above the double buffets. Down comes the mirror.
The old bar is leaving and replaced with a wine rack.
That's it for now, as I showed him the print (Big Sur) and he was like I hope that's not the price ! Were retired! He has no idea what anything costs! Margo I wanted to contact you but, couldn't figure out how. Will do pics when completed.

We are doing a lot of neutral colors and if you have lived with primary colors for a while, changing to neutral might be refreshing. Here are a couple examples: Dragonfly Lodge & Lake Bluff Lodge.

Yes, I painted metallic silver. Took down the mirror and moved the bar. The red wall really downsized the space.
