Are the roots ok?

I'm relatively new to orchids. I decided to expand beyond phalaenopsis orchids and purchase a cattleya orchid from orchids.com. It arrived in bloom which lasted about 2 days. My question is about the roots spilling out of the pot. They seem dead. Are the roots outside the container alive? Does it need to be repotted? Need advice. Thanks.

Many types of orchids will show their roots. It is considered healthy. When in top health the roots are plump and they have translucent root tips. They are fragile. If there is a break the root has no value below the break. And they break easy. They like to get wet but need to dry out. Does your plant have a name tag?

Give the roots a lot of water. If they turn color they are good. But if they don't it is possible goners. At least some are good.
