No brown!

Have I sort of painted myself into a corner with this rug? I bought 2 teal, 2 green, and the 1 multi colored pillow. I have ordered a white mirrored console table to the right of the sectional (it's ivory leather). I plan on using teal, green and gold decor to put on it. Right now, the mirror above the sectional is black. There is a black clock above the tv on the opposite wall, and the tv sits on a black media table. All the things I mentioned that are black, I planned on either painting them white or replacing them with white. Now that I have the rug and see the colors, idk if white would clash? What say you? I really want to brighten this room. Not darken it with brown.

I want to see the mirror too!

tedbixby - the plant is on the small mirrored table. idk yet if I'll keep it b/c I wanted something taller. I love the table's style though. Idk if you can tell in the pic, but it's gold and has a geometric pattern.

susan - I never remembered seeing a canvass framed. I had to google it. I like it as is better than framing.

zz - I didn't try the mirror as you suggested. Mr. has been out football partying all day so I had no way of trying it out. It's too heavy for me to maneuver alone. But as I think about it now, help me visualize it. The table is 35in tall and the mirror is 60. My ceiling is 8ft, not 9 as I thought. How high above the table would you take the mirror? For the mirror to work, the bottom would have to be lower than the top of the table.

Robin - it's in the 1st pic. Same mirror, just not black anymore. Sprayed it Champagne Nouveau yesterday. Its a soft gold color. Not brassy.

Thanks for the nice words all. Looking back through the thread, I'm so appreciative of all your thoughtful suggestions.

I know, I just want to see it painted with the Champagne Nouveau. The color is pretty and looks as if it would work well in your room....

It is. Is the pic too dark for you to see it? I'll try with flash. That's the frame.

That's the same mirror?? It's beautiful! Thank you - I might have to try that on something.....hmm.

haha...yep. Same mirror. The spray paint is by Krylon. Happy spraying!
If I am understanding your layout correctly...the white cabinet is where your black bookcase used to be?? If so yes by all means try the mirror vertical..love the way you put a new finish on it. I think adding it above the cabinet will really give it a designer look it will look like a built in of sorts and will really help make ceiling look higher. 7'-1/2" it will take up the entire space it will look awesome. Even if you just lean it on top to see if you like it.
ok got it. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

I really like that mirror over sofa. Great job on the color. Weird, but the new color actually makes it seem larger. Love it.

This is from Pier 1 also, bit pricey, but maybe we can find one similar and you could do your magic painting. I think it is beautiful and the shape is very nice over your new chest.

    $200??? Yikes! It's nice though.

Sorry but I don't agree with putting another mirror in the same space if you are keeping the one you have over your sofa...I would switch it up a bit more in such a small space. If I understand your layout correctly they would be on the same wall next to each other ???

I thought it was just one of those scroll work things. I double checked the site, and it is indeed a mirror. I wouldn't do another mirror, but I certainly like the design. And at 36", it's just the right width too.

Sorry to bug you...curious did you place your large mirror over the white cabinet just to see if you like ???? Sometimes you just have to try things you otherwise wouldn't think of..that is the fun of different ideas on this forum...believe me if it looks awesome great....if not it was worth a try. Hope you are having fun through this process.

Not yet. I'll do it this evening though. I'm all for ideas. Nothing beats a failure but a try! ;-)

I'd prefer a round piece, but would this work over my table? It's only $35 and it's 39x39. The table is 47in.

Yes, It would work, like you I would prefer something round. But that is amazing price.

Funny...we posted the same thing. Houzz has it a bit cheaper

Yes, was just checking Wayfair for better price.

I love the Wayfair tree, but is it too dark? I've saved it in to my idea board so I can go back to it. I live in the New Orleans area and the fleur de lis is EVERYWHERE, so that's a no. I found some better prices on the one we both posted, so that's up there at the top with the Wayfair tree. Once I get home, I'll try my mirror as zzmom suggested. This thing is wrapping up slowly but surely!

I bought some curtains from Ross today. IDK if I like the grommet style, but I'll check em out and see. As always, they're returnable.

I wondered also if it was too dark, but sent it anyway, because it is really nice and the reviews are great. Did you read them. I thought that you could use your magic paint and brush on some of that gold you have and lighten up the tree trunk. I think if you lighten up the darker parts it will be even more beautiful.

Could you post a photo that includes the sofa and the table so we can see if that wall can take another piece on it? I do like your new candle holders but am wondering perhaps a tall vase or something taller on that table would be better than putting something more on that wall. Will know better if we see an up-dated photo of this entire wall.

zz - My hubs refused to pull the table out, measure, put another hole in the wall for him to have to fill and repaint, lift that heavy .... mirror, and blah blah blah! There's no other way for me to see what it would look like. It can't just be held up there by hand because you have to lean over the table. Almost impossible with the weight of the mirror. It's pretty heavy. After he finished his monologue we got a good laugh. He has a point. The mirror is hanged by hardware on each side. It takes 2 people to take it off and put it back on. That idea is out unless I knew without a doubt it would stay there.

tedbixby - here's the angle I think you wanted.

Yes, thanks. Maybe this is where some simple white shelves go- above the table and to the right of the table lamp? Or at the very least, put some books under that lamp to bring it higher and call it good! It's really looking pretty :)

That's to bad..I really think it would look so much better...and would actually reflect something in it...certainly didn't want you to put holes in the wall until you saw it..well if you can change his mind..with my clients I put a soft towel on the furniture so as to lean the art or mirror for them to visualize it better. Still not diggin the two horizontal items together...but it is what it is. Time to get some shut eye..
Agree, the mirror is wrong in the space it is now, large art would be better, even a three piece
  • 10 years ago

I think when you get something over the cabinet it will make a difference in how the mirror looks.

Have you considered a collection of things to the left of the mirror and then to the right? What about an empty picture frame on each side. They could be painted the same color as the mirror. The room is looking good.

I will eventually do something different with the mirror wall, but for now it stays as is. At the moment, I don't plan to put anything to the left or right of the mirror. I don't want things to be too busy. With the art on the left wall and something over the table on the mirror wall, it may be a bit much if I put something on either side of the mirror. Idk...we'll see. As for over the table, I have something circular in mind. I've done a few diy around the house, and they usually cost $30 or less. *hint: that gold whimsical thingy susan posted from Pier 1* I've seen some pretty neat stuff on Etsy too.

I took a good long look at the room this morning and I'm so pleased with the changes. I wish I had a good DSLR so you could see what I see such as the tones of the colors. My cell over saturates my blues/greens bad. When I posted this dilemma, I was sure I'd have to decorate with the browns that I hate because I had no idea how to make the things I like work. I ran with most of your ideas and I'm so happy I reached out to you. Can't thank you enough. The final touches such as the perfect pillows and the over the tv situation will just take time. I know the pillows I want from this thread, but I have to wait. The ones I have only cost like $80 total. The ones I like are like $25+ ea. Power of the pillow indeed! I'm over budget, but not bad. Besides, that's what my Xmas bonus was for!

For what it's worth, Dear, I am thrilled with what you have done. I think the mirror over the sofa looks fab in it's new color and I agree, don't "junk" up every single wall space in the room. I think that your concerns about the rug are now gone and the room looks great. I agree with the pillow thing, I always find the perfect pillow at $100 and it takes time to find one that fits the room and the budget.

Katrina, I meant to post this several times as you posted updates to this thread.

I really like the green and patterned blue/green pillows you have on the sofa in the most recent pictures. I think they work very well with the new rug and I don't think you need to change them. They don't need to be an exact match, they just need to go together. And they most certainly do. The whole room came out great. Live with it as it is for a bit and see if you want to add anything. I think less is more sometimes. One thing you need to do, however - please take off the plastic on the lamp shade :-)

I know what I like and I know not everyone has the same taste, but somehow I feel a little better if someone else likes it too. Funny how that works huh?!

izeve - as I did my little 'walk-through' this morning, I took off tags and that horrid plastic! So funny you mentioned that. The only things I knew for sure were keepers were the floor lamp and the art. Everything else had a tag hanging.

I've been out of commission for awhile and I just thought I would check back in. It sounds as if you have finished. From looking at the last few pic's you've posted you did a great job. The room looks really good. Thanks for allowing us to help!

    Get well wishes @ Jo.

    Thank you happyleg.

Hi Jo. It was my pleasure having you guys help out. I have to do something with above the tv. The clock is still there for now. My sister and I painted the tv stand yesterday. We love it. And I made a little something to go above my table. Idk if it's staying though. The big stuff is done. We painted the brown door, and I'm currently painting all the baseboards...ugh! Over the next 2 or 3 weekends we're repacing all the door trims and that'll be it! I'll post pics tomorrow. I havent found my perfect pillows but I've moved on from that for the time being. Thanks for checking in, and get well soon.

Have you thought about putting something above the mirror to give it a different look .
Something like what? Not those awful greenery swags? ;-)

Yes, I've thought about getting a wider mirror. I'm out of budget right now though. What would you suggest?

Wow, busy girl. You have done a great job. Keep focused and don't "junk" up the walls :>)

Agreed. The only thing I've considered is a wider mirror. I'm happy with what we've (houzzers and I) done.

tedbixby - Well thanks for that. I'm not actively looking, but I'm ALWAYS open to seeing what's out there! I'm almost sure that's how the perfect pillows will appear
