All front legs of the sectional should fit on the rug. I would suggest an 8x10. A round coffee table would be good.

I agree with cutting a template from newspaper for a real visual. I would suggest rectangle, most likely 8x10 mentioned above, to elongate the space instead of creating a little island with a round shape rug. I also agree, a round coffee table will provide an easy flow in your room.

I think the best way is a rectangular rug with the front legs of sofa upon. Choose a rug from where it can be returned as you will never know what is right until it is in the room. Ideas for end, side table or coffee tables:

Is the large sectional staying, is it a recent purchase?
You need a good size rug to anchor the room. At least 1/3 of the front of the sectional should be on the rug. No to a round rug, IMHO they are a little frumpy.

You can use a native american rug with what is there as well.

Thanks everyone for the quick reply! I think I'm going to step away from the sale item and stick to what's going to be best for the room - rectangular! The 8 x 10 rug is pricey but I think it'll be the right choice! Now I just need to find a coffee table and rest of the stuff - ideally in white I think :) Will keep all posted once anything is purchased.

Not a white rug! That would be dangerous. White coffee table was a thought. Right now I have too much brown/wood in the room - I don't want to be one of those all brown living rooms. It isn't pictured but my media stand is wood too so I am trying to bring in other colors.

Just a thought. Shop carpet stores. They can cut and bind a carpet to fit your area. You are not bound, (pun intended), by size, color or pattern of manufactured area rugs. And you can buy bolt ends of carpets greatly discounted. Buy having a carpet cut to size you often can buy a better quality of carpet. Check it out before you purchase an area rug for your living room.

Its not just all brown you want to avoid, but also all wood. so i white wood coffee table wouldnt be good. Look for somethimmg metallic, glass, brass, etc. Like a roumd open metalic base with a glass top. Ivory drapery panels would look nice too. Esp if they had a trim detail to bring in some interest.

For me for Erica possibly, how does a rectangular elongate; if the sectional is equal on both sides, which side gets the longer part -- does an end table cover the longer side?

No on the white table, get something with glass top maybe some iron or metal legs, just not white, to stark with the dark sofa...I suggest finding pictures of rooms you like on here and try to copy the pic

I love Susan's suggestion. One additional point. I am buying more and more outdoor rugs for my house. The selection, materials and prices are incredible. They wipe up, sweep off and just handle anything. Check overstock.

Love Grover's first suggestion. Get a rectangular rug, but go for a round coffee table. It will bring some softness to the room.

What are the dimensions of your sofa? If you're on a budget, this square rug from Ikea is beautiful. It would look great with a glass top table. It's 6.5' by 6.5'. Nice thick pile too. Cozy underfoot. Comes in two colour ways.

Erica, have you measured your space yet? Before people respond they should know what size rug you need. It looks like an 8x10 will be too skimpy. You really need a rug large enough to ground the space. Sectional should be at least 1/3 on the carpet, better yet, sectional entirely on carpet. If it's not in your budget now, live without until you can buy the appropriate size. Or measure and have a carpet store cut a piece of broadloom and bind it. I have done this many times. It is a custom look, without the custom price.

Definitely not round shape for the rug. Your room looks as though it could use some pattern in the rug to add interest.

I can't thank everyone enough for input! I have to say I agree with everything you are all suggesting. Seeing the photos w/glass coffee table is lovely too - it would be great to get one in a brushed nickel finish since I have some touches of that in the room! I think we need some pattern too for the rug and then an ivory curtain :) Any feedback or more suggestions are welcome!

Ended up getting this rug and quickly put it down to see how it looks. I am sad to say I don't love it :( definitely feel like the pillows do not go. I'm afraid for opinions but I'm open to suggestions....can't feel much worse than I do already!

Oh and coffee table is temporary! It's from my old place and just there for now. Will be getting something more formal when I find the right piece

I think it doesn't go because there is such a stark difference in the color of the rug and the sofa. You need a rug that blends more with the sofa color. Now if it had a bit of brown or tan in it. I hope you can return it. Look at the posted photos of rugs. They are have some beige brown in them.

You could make it work if you loved it. If you don't love it, return it.

I think the rug is terrific. I even like the "temporary" round coffee table. Just add some pillows on the sofa to tie in the blue/cream from the rug. The blue toss blanket is perfect. Notice in this photo, the rug is blue, the sofa is brown but the pillows tie it all together. Good find on the rug...run with it.

The size looks right. If you do not love the rug, return it immediately...do not try to "make it work". I do agree that if you love the rug, just not feeling it with the couch, time for some throw pillows and a throw blanket. Your couch is neutral and looks just fine. The light coffee table may be more the issue. Love the plants!

The rug is good you just need to get different pillows and coffee table. The white one you just testing is confusing , remove it and take a picture again.

Our living room opens up to the dining room which is painted a very light blue. House hasn't been decorated yet but here are some photos. I want the living room to be its own room but of course compliment the connecting room!

I'm having a little trouble getting a handle on that blue. If you keep it, I'd probably go with some natural earthy tones, natural linen or burlap curtains, maybe even a rustic or industrial table, pillows without too much pattern.

I think I also prefer a rectangular table, obviously turned to align with the long side of the sectional.

I like the blue rug with the brown sofa. Blue and brown are both neutrals, and they are also complementary on the color wheel. Your current pillows work if you like a bit of an eclectic style, and maybe add a solid pillow or two. The shades of blue and cream in the rug brighten the space and add some interest without being overwhelming. The cream tones also tie into your kitchen cabinetry which is nice.

It always takes time to adjust to something new, so I'd give it a week or 2 to live with it (if that's within the return timeframe). If you still don't like it at that time, or you're just not feeling it, try another rug.

I agree on a wood rectangle coffee table. The sectional has a cozy feel, and I think the coffee table should have a similar feeling and weight to it for balance.

Erica, I like the rug and the size you chose. Your piece is a 5 seater
sectional with a wedge, not a corner fit. Do a round ottoman, maybe in the white color of the rug.

Hi all! I found a rug I love :) still shopping for a coffee table and accent pillows but the room is slowly coming together. Curtains were put up too since we last spoke! Now I'm starting to think about my dining room and have another thread going about that (specifically about rug size for table that extends). Try Home Depot, Lowes or Home Goods for rugs. They have some really nice things and are very reasonable. I like the 8x10 idea and a round or oval coffee table - not in white.

As long as you can bring it back......you can have a blast! trying things out!
