You might try Carlson's Gardens in NY which had it listed in recent years. Rarefind Nursery and Whitney Gardens are other possibilities. Mary Belle is really not orange, however. It is a peachy pink to pink depending on soil and weather conditions. It would be borderline hardy in the colder parts of Z5 as well.

Thanks akamainegrower, Rarefind doesn't have it nor does Whitney. Carlsons has it but the price in kind of high to me. Have you ordered from them before? Would you have any other recommendations for cold hardy orange rhododendrons?

I have not ordered from Carlson's in several years. The owner is getting along in years, so calling to check availability would be a good idea. Plants in the past were good. There really aren't any Z5 hardy broad leafed true orange rhododendrons, but there are several azaleas. See the discussion in this forum from a few months back.

Yeah it's definitely not orange. It's nice but I'd call it peachy-pink. Orange is the most elusive color in hardy elepidotes. After looking at thousands of pictures at hirsutum.org I can confidently say only a handful of cultivars come close. If you want an orange effect in the garden, get a deciduous azalea like 'Gibraltar'.

I never viewed Mary Belle as being a true orange but the closest thing to it that would be the most hardy. I went to that website david, hirsutum.org. How about those Azaleodendrons? Those are really something. I don't think I've ever seen those offered anywhere, not sure how they where even crossed. I like the Rhododendrons for their evergreen features as well as their colorful display. I'm not really an azalea person, though the flowers are beautiful I like interest for all seasons.

I have 'Broughtonii Aureum' and it is fully deciduous in my climate. Overall it looks more like a deciduous azalea, although the leaves are oddly thick and leathery. They are sterile as is usually the case with other "mule" plants. (and mules for that matter!)

I just noticed that Van Veen nursery is listing 'Mary Belle' liners...they are much more reasonably priced than most mail order nurseries. However, a liner sized plant requires a little more care and might not bloom for a couple years.
