It is mandatory where we live and you get very used to proper recycling and I feel guilty when not done correctly - lol. It depends on the space you can afford to set aside. We have one large bin that pulls out for cans/bottles, a tall wicker basket in a connecting room for paper/cartons and on one side of a double sink the compost bin resides - some people keep this under the sink. Regular garbage has to be considered as well and we have a separate bin. We have a very small kitchen and yet have been able to incorporate everything. When any of these are filled, there are specific bins outside and the sorting has already taken place. It is now second nature and for the kids especially who are even more conscious of the environment.
