beautiful island- how was it made?

The stone and wood come together seamlessly... I can't get a close-up to see how they are joined. Were they glued? Sealed where they meet? I love this look and have been looking for a classy way to expand my kitchen while saving $$ by repurposing the marble we currently have. I love wood! Do tell how to do it!

The granite top was installed first on top of steel bars that overhang its edge to provide support for the cherry top. They also keep the tops aligned both vertically and horizontally as they are attached to the wood top and island cabinet. We then could make the cherry top to match the granite's curve identically and install if with just a thin amount of clear silicone on the edges of the granite and wood. This was done in 2009 and there has been no separation to date. - I hope this helps- Stan

Love this island and am considering doing it in our kitchen. What sort of maintenance is required on the wood? Is it holding up well to scratches and stains?

The Cherry has a "catalytic" clear finish on it. This means the finish dries (hardens) chemically by a catalyst reacting with the finish similar to how a two part epoxy cures. This makes the finish much more durable than a standard air dry finish. The top just needs a damp wipe up for cleaning. So far the finish is holding up fine. - Thanks for the question. Stan

I don't know the brand of finish. Our cabinet maker did the finishing, but it's really a commercial product which is hard to do yourself. I'm sure there are several manufacturers who could supply this type of finish - but it's not for do it yourselfers.
