Making a functional living room

I am looking to make our living area more functional. We want a new coffee table (to replace the trunk) and need some sort of end tables by the couch or place to rest drinks etc while sitting on the edges of the couch. May think of adding a new chair too. And we will be getting a console table for behind the couch along the stairway under the photo collage. Excuse the Christmas tree!! Thoughts on design, function, and types of furniture would be awesome!!

What do you think of this layout? FYI - The shapes at the bottom are meant to be the railing and stairs.

I assume that you have several artists and/or photographers in the family. You are overloaded with pictures. There is so much "stuff" in the room, hard to know where to start. I would suggest that when you take down the Christmas décor, that you de-clutter a bit and then post new photos so we can see what stays and what you need.

Hi, just an idea for a new coffee table.

Something like what's shown below with 1-2 poufs placed underneath would be very functional and flexible for a family room IMO.

Use the ottoman as a coffee table with a tray or ditch the ottoman and get a coffee table no room for both you really do not have space for a console table IMO the room can not handle another chair thin out the art work it is over kill maybe utiize a hallway for a gallery the table in the corner with the small lamp makes no sense maybe an arc lamp in that space the lamp by the chair is too small. Some declttering is needed everywhere to actually make the most of the small space

I can only help with lighting. I know you didn't ask about it, but it has a lot of impact for atmosphere. Keep the ceiling light off. If you insist on using it, at least put it on a dimmer so you have maximum lighting flexibility. Get a large wall sconce for each corner of the living room and put them on dimmers also. I agree with thinning out the pictures. For more impact, use one vertical row of pictures (floor to ceiling) instead of a grouping on each wall.

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. I travel internationally for work a lot and my great aunt is a famous artist so we do have a wealth of art and 'clutter'. I know it isn't everyone's style. I like the layout idea and will have to try it along with thinning out where possible. We do intend to get a new railing or put flooring over that whole area.

I like the current layout. Your rug is the right size. I'd remove that table in the corner and add a small end table. You don't need nor have room for a console. I think when the tree us down we can give you better input. I love all the art and don't feel that it's too much

Bookcase can go under photos at steps for a chair & table next to fp.

You are only addressing the sofa/fireplace area. It looks like the dining space needs attention too?

Yes, we are waiting on our new dining table. It is one from Restoration Hardware. Stain will be dark brown. Not a lot else to address in the dining area because of space.

That is a nice dining table. RH has a nice bluestone xbase side and coffee table that might work in your space.

I would look for a small round coffee table. Maybe something that incorporates some storage or that a basket with a lid could sit under. I might consider painting the fireplace wall a more neutral colour. I think your art should be the "star" of the room. I would not add more furniture to the room; it's cozy as is.
