I think relying on help on the projects that need it only shows maturity as a gardener. It can free you up from drudgery to allow for more whimsy, not less! It's a lot easier to dream and imagine if you're not exhausted from grunt work!

There are ideas ... and inventories ... and seed orders ... but everything starts right here in the house, mostly in the warmth of the kitchen! Then, the South Window begins to fill and, proving less than adequate, I'll begin moving things into the greenhouse.

Beside the greenhouse, there will be a little hoop house over two garden beds. About the time I begin moving seedlings in the greenhouse, the hoops will go up and plastic film will go on and seeds will go in those beds.

I resolve to set a schedule and stick to it this year to really maximize my growing season. Seed starting begins in earnest in just a couple weeks.

My only resolution is to not feel agitated by rude people in the world.

Golden David, what are you starting this early?

I've been interplanting seed in the tunnels and coldframes. Last I looked things were popping up.

It's my first spring with the unheated greenhouse this year, and I plan to divide my seeds into two general groups and start them using propagation mats and the sunny shelf - on a sunny winter day it can reach soil temperatures over 80:

1. Onions, leeks, lettuce, spinach, beets, chard, cabbage: start these seeds in January to February to allow them as much time as possible to grow in the warmth of the greenhouse before transplanting out to the garden about 8 weeks before last frost. Will direct sow peas in February.

2. Tender annuals: I plan to start these seeds on the normal schedule as though I wasn't using a greenhouse, keeping the extra tender peppers and eggplants either indoors or under a low tunnel within the greenhouse to prevent cold stunting in March and April.

I started some broccoli seeds with my son in late December and they're up in the greenhouse.
