It might be a little much as far as seating once you get it all in there, but I think measurement-wise you technically have the room. I like the colors you've used.

Lovely space! I read that every room should have visually light weight, glass and shiny metal in it. I like the idea of a fairly narrow, perhaps brass legged, glass topped table behind the sofa where you could put flowers or a decorative item...maybe in a shiny metal or glass...http://www.wayfair.com/Console-and-Sofa-Tables-l443-c414605-O3795~Glass.html Instead of looking at the back of the sofa...which is like a barrier, you have that transitional piece that takes you from one living space to the next. And it being less visually imposing, it will lighten up what looks like quite heavy furnishings. The chest plus the sofa back to back is really a very big, dark, bulky mass. We think 'colours' but we need to think shapes/weight and balance.

I like your new choices and think they will work space considered. If you choose the larger sofas, keep the chairs on a smaller scale. I think glass top coffee tables will give the impression of more space. I have them in my home, and they are very easy to maintain.

What I do before furnishing any room is to draw out the room on graph paper, marking locations and sizes of all doors, windows and openings. Then I measure and cut out the pieces I already have on graph paper and experiment with placement. You need to consider walk-through zones, cabinet door opening measurements, and space needed between seating and coffee table. Once you know how your current pieces fit, you will know how much space you have for a sofa or other new piece.

Another thing to consider is if you will have carpets or wall-to-wall floor coverings or just wood floors. In a large room, you may want to group your seating pieces on a good-sized rug with some occasional tables nearby and place accent or storage pieces on bare floor around the room perimeter. In a smaller room, you may place most pieces against a wall. Be conscious of how far people will be if they are sitting across the room from each other.

I didn't layout your room to see about space. But it seems that no one ever benefitted from a larger sofa. Only 2 people will sit on a sofa no matter how big it is. So just get the smaller ones and leave yourself more flexibility for adding drink tables, a Christmas tree, and extra chair or whatever may come along later.

The fireplace and built ins and coffered ceiling are SO beautiful! Do you have a large light coloured or patterned area rug to define the space on which you are placing the sofas and chairs? Personally, I am not wild about all that dark furniture but that is what you have chosen. Can you make everything on the light side now to offset the dark? A light carpet, plenty of lamps with light shades will lighten up the area. Lighting is underrated. It really makes a room look inviting. Psychologically, we move towards the light because light gives life.

Light patterned or coloured curtains are a must (not sheers); not necessarily to ever pull closed, but to add some softness and 'gemütlichkeit' to the space that has a lot of hard, angular edges (windows, ceiling, built ins wall).

Can you add a large, 6 feet+ palm or two or three whose sweeping lines will offset the hard lines of the windows? They are so inexpensive. You can even replace them every year if they don't do well.

You asked about furniture placement and I am writing about everything but! I find this space (see link below) too dark, personally, but check out 2 interesting things; the glass coffee table which lightens the heaviness of the furnishings and the lamps on a table behind a sofa. Not only does it hide the back of a sofa (not so pretty), it lifts the eye. if you are uncertain about size choices, I have found taking craft paper and cutting out the size of the furniture options and laying it on floor is very helpful in getting a feel for how the spaces work, movement around them, etc.

Nice place. Maybe you should spring for a professional. Most will look at small jobs.

I really like that layout idea. I may be a little tight, but it will add to the cozy feel.
