1950s Ranch Home

We are trying to open up our existing floor plan - kitchen, dining nook and formal living room (rarely used). During gathering everyone seems to gather in our small kitchen. Opening this area, we are hoping to eliminate this issue and make better use of the space. Any suggestions?
