baptism gift

My little great nephew will be baptized on the weekend. Having just finished Christmas and giving a little outfit and toy as gifts, I dont want to repeat that. What would be a nice little gift?

It may be old school, but I always give savings bond for christening gift.

A small check that the parents presumably put aside in the child's savings.

Savings bonds aren't available in paper anymore although digital bonds can be issued electronically.

    A check and a 529 plan brochure.

I used to cross-stitch a small wall hanging with the date and Christian Symbol. I bet Pinterest has more modern ways of representing the day.

One of the best gifts my children received, and the only ones I remember, where sterling silver baby cups given to them their aunt and uncle. (This was back when they didn't cost 500.00, oh my!)

My kids still use those cups every Christmas for our egg nog toast.

Someday I may be able to actually let the kids take the cups to their own homes, maybe.

What about a child's bible with the little one's name inscribed on the cover? Of course it will be some time before it can be read by the boy, but I think that would be a special thing for someone to have as they grow up.

Money is always nice to receive, but it never occurred to me to give it for a baptism. I am obviously very much out of the loop. ;-)

i wouldn't give a religious item or a silver cup item unless i knew that the couple weren't/ or haven't received that type of gift yet... i think those types of gifts might be more appropriate being given by the godparents or grandparents, etc... i think one of that type of gift is plenty...

i would probably give a check... the mom/baby probably had a shower and new baby gifts when born and we just had christmas... there's probably been lots of gift giving to the baby in the past couple of months...

I would gift with a sterling silver or even a lovely pewter baby cup or child's flatware set.

I am unhappily leaning towards a check, as she has had many showers and christmas just passed. As lovely as things like silver spoons and cups etc. are beautiful I feel they are probably just put into a drawer and never looked at again.

RoseAbbey, while beautiful things are lovely, thoughtful gifts, it means just the same to give a check.

In fact, if the parents are putting money away in a special savings account for college, it's very meaningful.

This suggestion obviously depends on their style and your budget. If they are preppy and/or pinterest types they might like the PB Teen wooden monogram. There is a block style that could be used to decorate a boy's room.

RoseAbbey, maybe silver wouldn't be used but just before Christmas I was searching through the china cabinet that I seldom look through and found a darling baby cup tarnished badly. I polished it only to find that it had belonged to my stepfather's first wife. It made me smile to think of a beautiful woman being a sweet, wee girl. I now have it displayed proudly on a silver tray beside my coffee maker. I had quite a few sterling baby spoons and gave all but a few to my DD to use for my DGC. WTBS, I think all parents would appreciate a check or cash for the little one.

If you want to give a check, get a pretty silver piggy bank to put it in.

BP, the little sterling cup I found in my buffet was really banged up. That made it even more precious to me imaging that sweet little girl banging her cup about. My children used their china, cups, flatware for years and I have passed it down including my childhood china set. I always felt so special to have my very own set and now my darling DGD will use it. Hopefully it will be passed down yet again.

I have found out that the little guy has his own bank account, so I dont feel too bad giving him a check made out to him specifically.

It will be a much appreciated gift!
