You need to make a grouping at the fireplace. Use two love seats and measure carefully. In this picture the other side of the room is dining space.

When you pick a paint color for the walls, paint the built-ins the same color. This way they'll blend instead of standing out. A large mirror or really large clock above the fireplace could be added to keep the fireplace as the focal point.

I would want some kind of an entry way - probably 2 pony walls would work.

Do not add pony walls. So many people are taking them out of older homes when they buy them.

I wouldn't paint the cabinets because they seem to be the same as the kitchen, and the repetition is good. No on the pony wall too, especially since you've just installed that beautiful floor. It would just take up space.

Maybe a bench under one of the Windows or a narrow table to drop your keys and/or mail.

Not sure if you have room for a couch, but love seats tend to take up a lot of space but not give a lot of seating. 2 people rarely sit on one together. I'd do two chairs instead of one love seat.

Mirror, art or clock above the fireplace. I assume your tv will go on the left. This is a great blank slate to coordinate a rug, furniture and art. Hopefully someone blessed in color can give you some great ideas. I'm handicapped there.

I see the layout - with kitchen to left / dining to right just past living room - this is sort of a victorian bungalow layout with posh finishes, trim and high ceilings. So instead of worrying over adding walls or paint colors, let's keep things simple for you. You have some orange undertone in the wood built-ins and mantel. You also have offwhite / dark ivory trim. These are the built in things - so you want to harmonize with them when you select your color palette. I would like to see an amazing central light fixture on a dimmer since you have the high ceilings for it. There is an obvious spot here for the television above the console to the left of the television.

If you stick with warm neutrals (cream to camel to chocolate) for your upholstered pieces and focus on one primary accent color (just use it in a lot of shades) - a red-orange comes to mind as a good choice. The best place I would start is to select a large area rug for the front room - if you find something beautiful and classic it will help you set the color palette for the spaces. Overstock often has great options. This will want to anchor your seating areas. What are the dimensions of the main room? Is it around 16' square? You would look for an 8 x 10 or 9 x 12 rug to help define the conversation area in front of the fire ...

If you did want a screen / to create a foyer, with the high ceilings, I think I would plunk a hall tree piece of furniture exactly opposite the door where the floor changes. However, this is also going to block your view of the door, the light from the door and so forth - I'd be more inclined to create shelter and privacy with plantings outside and use the whole room.

Imagine a 12' square conversation area floating in the room, yet anchored in the center on one side by the fireplace. You need a path to the kitchen on the left so pull the furniture closer to your built ins and consider using the opposite wall for an art gallery of larger pieces to help visually balance the built ins.

The television location suggests the best place for a longer sofa is facing the fireplace - about 9'- 11 feet away depending on the room size . ..a pair of armchairs might face each other placed to turn the corner of the square at each end of the sofa - angled towards the fire or directly across from the television during parties. You might use narrow benches under the windows that can be pulled into the grouping when you have a crowd. Perhaps use a console or sofa table behind the sofa with lamps there, and a beautiful coffee table in the center of the room.

Consider a round pedestal table in your dining room with a built in banquette to save space and make it more multifunctional for everyday - Ballards has some high end options on their banquettes.

You have some modern lined furniture. In this home, you are going to want some classic lines - transitional will work but modern would be a big stretch - you might put the great mid mod armchair in the master bedroom, for instance. Let me find some rooms and suggest some rugs ... in photos this time.

Here's a picture of a transitional room in warm neutrals with color in art, pillows (and I'll suggest the rug too) - the tone of your wood to me suggests a red-orange, but your existing colors would also work with dijon /gold tones, or added cobalt / deep blues. What color are you drawn towards? Do you have any art you really love that you want to use?

This is one way to bring in some color that will work with the ivory andgold / camel / wood tones you have in the built in things here. You might look for a great piece of art with some pomegranate / tomato / red-orange features in it for over your fireplace. Etsy can be great for real art - that is the one place in the room you should sort of splurge on the art - a canvas can be hung without a frame and generally is the most cost effective for a large piece. Art.com will have some fine art prints on canvas that could be great. Here, I'd also eventually suggest drapery since you have high ceilings and hard floors - if only to help dampen the noise.

thank you, I'm taking everything you are saying to heart! of you can see the Windows in the living room are very detailed. How would you hang curtains on these? Above the frame of the window our above the wood. does that make since?

What a very pretty room!! Do not use overhead lighting!! The harshness will destroy a cozy look. Remove the blinds and possibly use fabric roman shades. Use lamps for your lighting. A farmhouse look will be great!

A country farmhouse look in a victorian bungalow can be pulled off beautifully - especially furniture with lines on the shaker side. One painted sideboard or secretary or sofa table (this you could DIY on a hand me down storage piece with annie sloan chalk paint) would help break up so much of the same wood and advance that look.

Your woodwork / corbels / carving under the windows are pretty ornate so you want to either use strong color on the walls and go really modern (tougher to pull off but possible with help) or do a transitional mix like your favorite farmhouse. Pottery Barn and even Ikea has some great slipcover sofa and chair profiles (pb comfort / ektorp) that are comfy and slipcovered stuff is smart to buy when you are young because you can rotate from washable denims to linens and velvets as your situation evolves.

Drapery want to be hung wide of the windows and the fabulous trim and to the ceiling since you have the height and can pull it off. Mostly the drapery will sit open and make the windows look bigger, add softness and texture and color, but at night / winter nice for the cold . .

Here's the contemporary / color approach (which I'm not sure you want) to victorians but what is great about this even for you is that you can add a slim piece of trim at the height of the white / base of window top trims and paint everything above that your light trim color for a great way to work with the ceiling height . .

Finally - been searching victorian farmhouse combos - this is great for the light fixture - on a dimmer hng about 8' above the floor . . would set the right mood in your space for your farmhouse thing . .

I'm with you - a little more color will feel more homey - you really have to have great windows / natural light and it helps to have interesting architecture to pull off white walls - these look barely offwhite if you see the contrast back to the trim and shelves . . .
