Paint in a creamy white to go well with the floor and when dry...sand thru a little to give it a distressed look to go with your tile. you may opt to leave the backsplash after you see the cabinets done. The wall above you can match the cabinet color.

I would start by installing some under-cabinet lighting and removing the stone veneer from the island. It could change your whole opinion of the kitchen.

I'm in the same boat with my brown kitchen and have a similar amount of cabinets. Quotes ranged from $3-4K to paint them.
I ended up selling my existing cabs and getting new ones with shaker doors. I figured if I was going to spend that much, I better get what I really want ;)

I had sample doors made in two colors that see mentioned here a lot, BM Dove White and Behr Swiss Coffee. The Dove is beautiful in any light, the Swiss is nice too but changes from white to cream in different rooms against different colors.

I think you'll like the space much more once you brighten it up!

I agree with pp, remove the stone on the island.

I would say it depends on your style! I can see painting the base cabinets a charcoal grey to tie the stone on the island and countertops together and going with a off white for the uppers with an under tone of grey...... Bases in my opinion are not nearly as noticeable as uppers are..... So darken the bases to ground the kitchen with the high ceilings and brighten the uppers to make it more welcoming and clean looking. Under cabinet lighting is a definite must and even having lights above cabinets could be interesting.....I would just paint the wall section above cabinets the same as the uppers to give the illusion of the cabinets going to the ceiling. ......
