I find that 15" to 18" from the edge of the sofa to the coffee table is quite enough in a living room. Most people have a table that is too small. You can use 30" to 34" coffee table with no problem.

You are doing really great. Don't judge each item individually. That's why designers like to do a complete installation in one day. We collect all the pieces in a warehouse and then, bam, install in one swoop. When you are doing it all yourself, sometimes your second choice works better in the long run. Anyway, it's mostly about lighting, music, art and your personalities!

I like the idea of getting someone to make a coffee table for you. Here's one that could be done. Make it all in oak and then place a piece of slate on the top.

Post a sample board here of everything that you purchased: the rug, throw pillows, tv easel, the west elm throw, the wood shelves, and the sofa you have. Also the coffee table you are having made and what you have in mind for the art. If it's all in one place, it's easier to see what can be added at a later date.

Is it too late to reinstall the shelves? You're going to have trouble filling them in a balanced way with that configuration.

The rug and sofa look fantastic. I have recommended the tv easel to everyone. How do you like it? I agree with groveraxle about the shelves. When facing the shelves the bottom longer shelf should start 1/2 the way from the center of the upper shelf. This will give you room to put a larger item on right on the bottom shelf. um this room is soooooooooooo coming together. wow. love the easel. love the rug. like the shelves.you need some accent lighting and table for sure. i think you only need one chair. and you need to think about some color. also about the shelves, I think you should pull the sofa off the window wall. a wee bit so curtains can hang. and maybe so you can put a table behind it. the shelves are great just a little bit. also an arch lamp.

I just read over this discussion and it's so inspirational to see how you progressed. These discussion threads are a wonderful idea, especially when someone like you takes the comments seriously.

You mentioned awhile ago that you were collecting black and white photos. It's a great idea to frame them for the floating shelves. Just take a look at the pics for framing suggestions (January 10 and January 16).

Don't forget to install the curtain rods close to the ceiling. This will make your room look larger. Stick with a linen or natural curtain, open neutral weave or tone on tone. By keeping the large pieces neutral, your accents, art, lamps, pillows, can be anything you like.

I agree with flair lighting (above) to add some color, (go for it!) lamps and a narrow table behind the sofa in front of the window. I would love to see a leather lounge chair and ottoman in your room. The ottoman does not have to match the lounge chair and can be on the smaller side. Find the lounge chair first.

A neutral chair can always be spiced up with pillows. You should be able to get a chair on the corner of the rug, and it might even be within reaching distance of the coffee table (which is awesome, BTW) I happened to have a chair facing the right direction, so I stuck it in..

I added an end table and a floor lamp on the right of the sofa. Neutral curtains in linen or burlap always work.

Decide what will go on your shelves before you adjust them. Depending on what you put there, they may just work.

If you add a lounge chair, make sure it is comfortable or you will never use it. The first two above are cute but not comfy. The last one looks very traditional with the tufting and turned legs. Go around with your husband and sit in some (not buying) so that you know what you will like. You can always add it in the future.

I agree with groveraxle, and complete the other items: end table, lamp, curtains. Frame your black and white photos, hang art. Then revisit the lounge chair idea.

Here's the specs on the lounge chairs from Wayfair. Well, that taught me a lesson to save the info at the beginning. I have never gone on the Wayfair site. They have everything!

For curtain rods, I always use simple brushed nickel, all the way across the window (4" to 6" beyond the actual window frame) and the curtains from the ceiling to the floor. West Elm has something similar to what I like. This is where it gets personal, choosing the details. Keeping the curtain rods and hardware simple will keep the focus on the more important details of the room.

I am not a fan of curtains with the grommets. Classic curtains shirred on the rod look best. If you need privacy, add shades, wood blinds or sheer curtains behind. The linen panels should not be moved. The room will always look good with no fuss. The other piece of advice is the curtains should be 2-1/2 times the width of the window. Don't skimp on this. You have spent time and money on designing, and the curtains will be a huge impact, even if it is in the background.

When you get to the dining room curtains, remember that because of the open plan, you will see both the living room and dining room windows in one shot. What do you look at from the dining room? Either match the same as the living room or just use the wood blinds or shades same as the living room.

The worst design decisions people make is that they put too many "things" in the room. One always needs "the luxury of space", meaning simplify the room. Think of it as clothing. When you see a beautiful well dressed person, you rarely remember what they are wearing in the coordination and simplicity of the outfit.

You are right, this one is not it. Before you get another one, pass it by the peanut gallery (us). There are very good designers on your thread.

Here are three end tables from World Market. I don't know their actual sizes so I rendered them the approximate sizes they should be. The copper one seems to pick up the brown color in the rug.

One of the things that is missing in this room is somewhere to put stuff. Any of these end table could be the answer and different styles are available in walnut or black which would fit in nicely. You will see this table from all angles so it is important that it doesn't get junked up - that's why drawers/doors would be good. This first one looks very contemporary, but remember metal reflects what is in the room and I love the hidden compartment!

More suggestions. I hope this isn't too overwhelming. The point is you should now tie in all the other elements you have already done. The table under the lamp should relate to the floating shelves and the coffee table. I would like to see a lighter wood like the shelves. The drum table and the concrete table below are suggestions to use next to the chaise. I still would like to see storage in this table, but anything would look great.

Thanks for the ideas to both groveraxle and Denise! That WM table picks up the brown color in the rug perfectly. It's definitely interesting and unique table. There is WM close by so may go check it out tomorrow. I also like the idea of something in a light wood like the shelves. I love the Joss and Main "Living on the Edge" table but nervous about ordering from somewhere that returns will be tricky. I really appreciate this ideas and will look into them and see if I find anything interesting too. :)
