This panel report, and some of the other work by panel members, may finally allow the introduction of GMO-based seed and crops in areas where they have not been previously welcome. The careful description of many of the associated organisms used for gene transfer may help demystify processes used for some GMO crops, and consequently bring them into wider use .

Besides the work mentioned in the report, there is a very significant effort to develop a set of nitrogen-fixing cereal crops for planting particularly in Africa. The Gates Foundation has allocated well over $10 million to this project already. Even countries which have not previously allowed GMOs may change their stance because of the potential for significant crop yield increases at a lower cost of production. Note that there is a lot of controversy about this work: not so much concern about the GMO crop itself, but whether or not existing sources of nitrogen are being adequately utilized. There is also discussion about the role of cover crops and crop rotation should a nitrogen-fixing cereal be introduced.

You may also see a GMO banana with improved fungal tolerance, and maybe even a papaya with several improved traits within the next few years. As the processes used for GMO breeding become less mysterious, the hope of some workers in the field is that there will be a gradual acceptance of their benefits.
