Print Sectional

I'm having a problem deciding on an area rug in this living room to go with the sectional print. The sofa colors are beige and dark taupe. The wall color is beige and the flooring is hickory. At the moment I am using mineral blue as an accent color, which carries into the dining room. There is also a dark brown chair and a beige (same as in the sectional) club chair and ottoman in this room. One of the art pieces I have currently have has a small amount of mustard color, which I really like and wasn't sure if it would be possible to incorporate. The lamps are mercury glass and the window panels are mineral blue, but both can be changed depending on the rug choice.

A nice Oriental rug with those colors would pull it all together

With the curve of your sectional, if you choose an area rug with a definite border or centre medallion etc. you'll need to think about how it will look if you want to place the front feet on the rug. You might want to consider an all over pattern.

Is that the final resting place for the sofa? It looks "off" with the windows behind it.

Make sure you have it exactly where you want it before you buy a rug. Sizing is important.

We took one section out of it and centered it in the window. I am thinking of an 8x10.

Centering on the window...perfect. Must you take a section out to do that arrangement?

8 x 10 sounds as if it would work.

What if you stayed in those neutrals for the rug? (Lamps Plus

Chandra Mercury MER6903 Taupe) Then add some of the mustard into throw pillows?

Yes, due to doorways, two chairs and television cabinet. Not a lot of wall space to work with. With measuring the area, the 8x10 would be the logical choice. I like the Volare rug pattern that Betty suggested, or the one from Pottery Barn. Both incorporating the mineral blue/aqua. I really appreciate the input from all.

I have been searching for a solid taupe, but haven't found a shade I like. This one is beautiful. I also really like the mustard in the pillow. I had mentioned that a wall picture I currently have has some mustard in it, so I like the taupe/mustard combination. Would I use a darker window panel rather than the mineral blue?

Yes. I suggest changing your window treatments..too filmy for the sofa material. Try matching up the mustard color. Try a linen texture or something like:

BTW..love the fabric on the sofa.

I agree on the window coverings. Not just the color, but the fabric. I like the texture of linen. Just so happens that I am getting linen panels for the patio door of our new four season room! Textures are important. Going the mustard route with the accent color leads me to think that I may want to change out the lamps from the mercury glass?

There are a lot of patterns going on at the same time. Your curtain is a nice soft and soothing color. The rug could be the same color, but possibly round to match the curve in the sofa.

The sectional and windows remimds me of this amazing living room. Now I know you want a neutral pallette but what you can steal from this great design is rug pattern placement, coffee table style and shape, window treatment style and placement, and etegare placement. Plus the pattern mix overall just imagine it in taupe instead of blue

dubnovitch, you can use the mercury lamps...actually they would add a sparkle to the taupes...just change the shade to continue with the mustard accent.

After I posted my comment I realized the same thing. Thank you so much for helping to lead me in this direction. I knew I liked that mustard color in the art work and I'm excited to incorporate it on a larger scale. The dining room panels that I got last month also has a small amount of mustard, so all will tie in nicely. Your input has been much appreciated. I'll have to post pictures when all is finished.
