Appliance Armageddon

I am at my wits' end with everything in my house deciding to break at the same time. Our dryer died a couple of months ago. Then our furnace needed some repair. My bathroom ceiling developed a leak from condensation in the vent fan during very cold weather, and damaged the ceiling.

Last week we decided to use some savings to go on a vacation in March. We booked flights, hotel, etc., non-refundable of course!

This week, two wheels on the racks in my ancient dishwasher snapped off, and the center spray arm in the center is not retracting at the end of the cycle. Time to replace. Then, the clothes washer decided to join in by having a problem in the spin cycle-- I'm having to run the spin again to get the water out of the clothes. It's demise is imminent, I'm sure.

Then, last night our family room TV died. DH just went to buy a new one.

Unfortunately, I didn't win the Powerball last night. So, I guess I need to make friends with someone at an appliance store.....

    When it rains, it pours.

I think there is nothing worse than shopping for appliances now, so I sympathize a lot. They're made poorly now, too many bells and whistles who cutting back on simple high quality. I think it's a racket. I ended up buy a gas range on Craigslist for my "new"kitchen because I could not find one range I liked, even little (other than the Wolf, but I was not going to spend $5K for a stove!).

    It's maddening.

    Good luck!

Or negotiate a bulk discount. Sorry for the run of bad luck!

On the bright side, the new TV is quite impressive. It's a smart TV and DS is giddy with joy over being able to watch dumb YouTube videos on the big screen :-)

My truck is doing this!! DH started talking about selling her, and she got mad. She has littered away $1000 dollars in the past week in parts.

Just thinking that the washer may not be balanced. I have had that happen . DH says to check that drain line is not blocked or kinked.

2013, couple of months before Thanksgiving, our Kitchen Aid Superba dishwasher gave it up......italics added to model name for maximum irony.

2014, just before Thanksgiving, our 23-year-old Subzero 48" refrigerator died and had to be replaced...ouch.

2015, just before Thanksgiving, our five ton Trane furnace (larger of the two systems in the house) died after 24 years....whoa.

This year I am betting it will be the washer and dryer. I would go and live in a hermit cave but I like sanitized dishes, temperature controlled food, and being warm :-)

My parents' refrigerator stopped working correctly the day after Christmas. Thank goodness it waited until after the big party on Christmas day to get temperamental. My father ran out and bought a mini-fridge to tide us over until the big unit could get repaired sometime after New Year's Day. I don't know why appliances seem to break at the (almost) worst possible moment.

Kswl, not only are they evil, I think they conspire with each other. I forgot to mention our coffeemaker also died last week. It was a grim morning at 4:30 am with no coffee!

Thanks 4boys, I am excited to do that. I can catch up on some series I want to see!

So sorry this is all happening at once JLC, and right after booked a vacation. Maybe tgat was a gift, since you may have chosen not to go had all this happened first. I had to laugh at the fact the TV was replaced immediately though.

I fear that will happen to use one day as most everything was bought within the first couple years we moved onto our, then, new home.

    Kswl,

You need to out smart the appliances and do your w&d research ahead of time so you're ready for their inevitable betrayal.

    Jlc,

You'll need that vacation after the stress of dealing with all these inconveniences.

Last year, my fridge died while I was out of town for the month. I had it easy, doing the research and arranging for delivery from 800 miles away, while my poor husband was living out of cooler in the garage. I can laugh about it now but I don't know if he can.

I will replace them with another Bosch set. These have done yeoman's duty for nine years, used....abused.

Good to know, I will file this away for future reference. My w&d are 20+ years old and are probably surviving on borrowed time.

Jlc, it is a much needed vacation. I swear appliances DO conspire to go out at the same time.

All kitchen appliances here were new in 2013 when we renovated the kitchen so I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will be good to go for another 8 or 9 years.

Our W & D are about 18 years old and I can't wait until they give up the ghost. They are front load HE and a huge PITA! They work and are huge capacity because we had teenage daughters when we bought the house. I'm not sure what I will replace them with but our appliance guy and I are on first name basis because of replacing many appliances at our rental properties.

Two weeks ago when at my DD's I got an emergency call from DH. Our oil tank developed a leak. As soon as he repaired one leak another developed. We called our oil company and they came out with a pump and oil barrels, drained the old tank and bypassed it so we still had heat. few days later they were able to replace the tank for us. That was worse than any appliance demise and hopefully the new tank will last the rest of our days.

I swear the appliances conspire while we are sleeping. "Okay, gang, let's all go kerflooey tomorrow right before the big party". Right now my icemaker is broken, the garbage disposal gets stuck on on, the dryer no longer stops when you open the door and spews half dry clothes out the door and the vent door on the OTR microwave is held together with a rubber band. The pendant over the sink is broken but that is not an appliance, so it doesn't count. I've also been told the furnace is on its last legs. Sigh.
