Lela - one the first floor there is a 24x24' garage and a 12'x24' utility room in the back. There is a stair (door is behind tree in this photo) that leads to a second floor room. Also on the second floor is a full bath, kitchenette, and storage, plus room for the mechanicals.

Interested in building a detached garage/shop. This garage has the craftsman styling of our home. Can you please tell me what a garage like this costs from start to finish?

Wendi - thanks for getting in touch. As for the cost of this garage compared to what you are proposing there are too many unknowns to give you an accurate answer. I will say that garages with living space above are way more expensive than people think. In an effort to keep the overall size of the structure as small as possible (no one wants a giant thing in the back yard) the framing gets complex. There is also everything in this structure that is in a house - mechanical systems, electrical, plumbing, tvs, kitchens, etc.

So when you are thinking about the cost of these projects imagine you are building a house, not a garage, and your estimate will be more accurate.
