Ideas for adding a modern front porch/patio

We'd like to update our exterior, but keep it in line with the modern structure of the home. Think more Frank Lloyd Wright, less grandma's cottage:) We're considering everything from louvered awnings to extending the roofline (either a continuation or perpendicular gable). We'd like to keep as much light coming into through the big window as possible.

I think you could do a lot with playing up the modern features. Things like removing the shutters and brick planter. Paint two tone dramatic colors and some dramatic landscaping.

There is nothing harder than trying to remodel a split level home. Google it. There are some web sites devoted to split levels.

It looks to me as if some effort has been made to increase the cottagey look. Yellow house with blue shutters says Cottage to me. You could remove the shutters. Paint the upper half of the house the same color as the brick. Your address plaque will have to go, as will the porch light.

This is my attempt to show the house all painted in one color. The program would not let me remove the shutters but at least they are obscured a bit.
Individual house numbers rather than a plaque.
More modern looking exterior light. Yes, I know that normally the lights and numbers would match but these are just for ideas.

I'd keep the brick planter and re-face it with natural wood in a horizontal pattern. Landscape with grasses.
