Need help with Brother Pe 770

I'm a newbie, here and to embroidery and need some help.
I have black thread on top and white for the bobbin thread. I did a butterfly and Initials both are white with the black running through it and little bunches of thread on the back side. Shouldn't they be black since the top thread is black??

That sounds like a tension problem. Did you use a stabilizer under the fabric? There needs to be some kind of stabilizer to support the fabric while the machine is sewing.

You can also try adjusting the tension. If the bobbin thread (white) is pulling to the top the top tension is too tight.

be sure to have the presser foot raised while threading the machine.

I agree with the top tension. I would check my bobbin tension while I was at it.
