Small Kitchen 10' width x 18' length....Design help!!! Going CRAZY!

Hey, so we are trying to design our new kitchen, which is 10' width x 18' length, and really have no idea what the best design approach would be. We do not want a formal eating/breakfast area, just a kitchen cabinets with an island.

How would this small space be best designed? Should we just do linear down one whole 18' wall and in an L shape with an island (like 7' x 3') down the middle? No cabinets on the other wall to provide room for stools?

Anyone have any valuable input?

Best idea is to spend $250 and get a kitchen designer. You only need to hire one for a consult. You can hire them for the whole project if you so desire.

Be sure and have plenty of pictures of what you want/ do not want and what you love/ do not love. Also, have a list of what you MUST have, and would LIKE to have. They also need to know your style, that's why pictures help so much. They need to know what you are thinking about.

Best money you will ever spend. They will help you find your voice and make your kitchen what you want and need.

Well, if your cabinets are 24" deep, your room becomes more smaller wherever you put cabinets. That is an important factor on whether or not you have an island or not. If you do put an island, you're going to want to have at least 4' of walking space on all sides of your island, that way your appliances are in no way inhibited by not being able to open enough, or banging into your nice island. Just a thought. :) Also, drawing out a rough floor plan with all appliances in the places you would want them to be might help too. If you don't like a layout you've drawn, you can always erase but if you decide that you don't like something after you have already redone your kitchen, that's going to cost you. Take into consideration how wide, tall, and deep your appliances are while drawing your rough draft because some modern fridges are deeper than your kitchen cabinets and if you place your fridge next to your cabinets, the difference in depth will be noticeable (we have a deeper fridge vs. cabinet depth in my current house, maybe about four inches deeper than the cabinets and it is a little noticeable than if you had a more seamless look, where the fridge and cabinet depth are basically the same.) I hope this helps. I don't know if you've thought about this before or not, so if I gave you info you already know, I apologize! haha
My parents spent quite a few months gutting the entire kitchen (and floor, since that had rotted out) and rebuilding so hopefully the stuff I mentioned helps.

I don't think Ieft off a zero. In Indiana, you can hire a kitchen designer for a consultation for $250. If you have things organized, best $250 you can spend.

A floor plan detailed will get some helpful response otherwise we just keep firing ideas.

Why do you want an island? I would think the best use of a long space would be to make it a galley kitchen with rows of cabinets and countertops along both walls.

Do you want to use the island as a small informal eating area? If so, you could instead leave space under one section of countertop to use as an eating area. The stools could be stored under the countertop when not in use.

What's on the other side of the kitchen walls? If it's the outside, maybe you could put a window in above the breakfast bar. If it's a family room, you could cut a hole to add a pass through at the breakfast bar if you wanted to.

And I agree that a rough drawing showing window and door locations and the functions of adjacent rooms is needed for people to best help you.

Yes, post a floor plan showing doors, windows and adjacent spaces (preferably the whole floor).
