Ikea Sektion Question

I'm planning an Ikea kitchen for out vacation/rental home. We have a problem corner where the entry door is because the location of the door limits the depth I can use to 19" in order to clear the door frame. What I am hoping to do is to put a 15" drawer base next to the door and then use a 30" tall corner wall cabinet next to that. For the rest of that wall, I will put the base cabinets out 2" or whatever is needed to align with the 26" depth of the corner wall cabinet.

I *think* this will work. And it might have other benefits as well in that the sink cabinet will be deeper than normal leaving a bit more room for the faucet to clear the window frame and will also help to keep the 15" deep wall cabinets from seeming too invasive. The cleanup zone (sink/dishwasher) is the only work area on this wall.

Is there something I'm missing? Any reason this won't work or would be a bad idea? The other options would be to use a filler to connect the 15" deep cabinets to the 24" deep cabinets which would give me some dead space, or I could try to hack something which I'm not eager to do.

NJ - can you post the floor plan? I think I'm correctly visualizing your idea, but I'm not sure.

I wish I knew how to post my layout showing the Ikea cabinets. I did the layout in Excel and only know how to create a pdf view. Basically I'm trying to find a way to transition from a 15" deep cabinet to the 24" standard depth. Any suggestions on how to post a pdf?

I know the Ikea 30" high wall cabinets use the same doors as the base cabinets. And they have a wall corner cabinet with the angled front I am looking for. I think it will work but trying to confirm.

    Thanks.

Will these base cabs be on the knob side or the hinge side of the door? If it's the knob side, it might be nice to just have 12- 18" of clear floor to that side.

If you're on a PC, you can use the snipping tool to save your drawing and post here.

Thanks - I had no knowledge of the snipping tool! Here is a clip of that corner.

I'm not too keen on leaving that corner empty. it would make the wall look so unbalanced, especially of I left the wall cabinet off too and I need that cabinet for glassware. If you see the blue line, that is where the dishwasher door is now, with an angled cabinet between that and the door wall. So what I am planning will open it up quite a bit.

Here is a picture of the complete layout I have planned. The top leads to the living room and lake views. There will be a deep counter there with stools. The door on the right leads to the dining area. The refrigerator is on the left just above the pantry door. We can't move the exterior window/door because the house is brick and it would be too costly.

Home reborn - thank you for posting this picture. I have a corner like you picture planned in our kitchen-to-be, and I've always just tried to picture it in my head. And there's a real life photo!

This is EXACTLY the issue I am dealing with in planning my Ikea kitchen! Home Reborn, I'm leaning towards simply doing a right angle like you did and not attempting some kind of gradual transition. Question--for your bank of shallow base cabinets, did you have to allow any filler on the left side next to the dishwasher end panel? I was wondering if my shallow drawers would scrape the exposed end panel of the standard base cabinets. I'm hoping that if everything is nice and square it won't scrape. Thank you!

Home Reborn your pic is spot on. And it is a beautiful kitchen! But in the pic it looks like there might be more distance between the door and the deep counter (sink base) than I will have. Can you recall the width of the shallow section? Also my door opens the opposite way so I think that still makes me think I should stick with an angled transition if possible!

By the way, here is another thread where I posted details on what I hope to do with that wall by hacking a corner upper cabinet. There is some other suggestions for dealing with the problem as well. my other thread

The shallow section was 36" wide - two 18's (with shallow drawers on top, doors on the bottom).

Why not re-hinge the door to swing the other way? Or just take it off?

It's an entry door so it can't be removed. Changing the hinge side might help a bit but not sure if I want the door banging against the cabinets! I guess there are always tradeoffs in these situations! I do love your space though.

...Or have the door swing to the outside of the house?
