dark floors make your kitchen crumbier, which is not a terrible thing, just a bit more upkeep. small will always look small but there is nothing wrong with small and interesting.

I think it's one thing if you have dark floors that continue into other rooms. Otherwise, I prefer a kitchen with a medium-toned floor. A main consideration is that you get some contrast with the cabinets, so depends on what you are planning there.

acm - Good point. Thank you. The flooring on adjacent rooms is light so I imagine suddenly a very dark floor in the kitchen would be too much of a shock.

Like clothing, light colours cause spaces (and people) to look larger. The "dark floor" would cause the space to 'close in' or shrink a little. It will feel "cozier". This is fine so long as that is what you want. Where as a light space will appear/feel bigger, more spacious.

Flooring is not a single entity in a kitchen. It must work along side 6 other elements. Contrast creates "interest" and interest keeps you from getting bored with your kitchen.

The rest of your kitchen will dictate your colours and undertones. Your personal desire for a smaller looking space (dark floor) or larger looking space (light floor) will tell you which way to go.
