That is why many people use mulch...

My philosophy on the matter is weeds can't grow where something else is already growing. I find all sorts of unique flowering species to plant.

I have had some interesting weeds pop up over the years. Sometimes I keep letting them grow just to see what they will be. One time the weed formed a bunch of little black berries. I also have a volunteer fig plant that popped up. I guess we'll have to wait to see whether it's a female that will produce fruit

We also had some beautiful electric blue "wildflowers" that popped up in one spot in a moist nook between two bushes. Apparently the lobelia that was in a flower pot had spread.

Not for me in So. CA, we haven't had enough rain to promote many weeds. I also had fewer this summer because we weren't watering much. But the roses suffered that lack. Barbara, maybe you are in No. CA.

Oh, gosh socks, I have a weed explosion going on in my soCal back yard. The soaking we got awhile ago topped with the gray misty mornings have created a weed smorgasbord. I haven't watered since sometime in December (other than spot-watering my vegetables) but the weeds are everywhere...lovely water-retaining clay soil :)

I live in the desert in SoCal and weeds are growing in area's where i don't water..I guess from the few down pour's we've gotten.

After rain, weeds are always a problem in my beds, but more insulting is that grass sprouts in the beds instead of the lawn!
