Nosoccermom -- I really don't know exact pricing of recessed lighting because I don't have a head for keeping prices. I buy them from my local electrical supply house and give them to my electrician to install. Not sure what you'd consider medium priced lighting -- maybe $250-350? Yeah, they're considerably less than that.

I am in the midst of replacing that same fixture....got this semi-flush mount at Home Depot for around $70.

The square pattern Limoges is gorgeous. I would have it in a heartbeat but for the cost. What does a 10-12" cost? I suspect it's more than I want to pay for three hall lights. Otherwise, sign me up.

My house has no single style. It is not just one thing. I'm hopelessly unstyled. I always used to say Transitional because I thought it meant somewhere between Traditional and Contemporary. But if drum lights are Trans, then I'm not.

I don't think the schoolhouse lights look industrial to me. Institutional maybe. But labels aside, I think they look good in my hall since I know what lies beyond. Are they bathroom/kitchen-y because they're enclosed?

The brass porthole light is awesome, but unfortunately it would be a crime to waste three of them in my hallway, plus they be huge.

I think "Institutional" is what I was thinking. Just something about them makes me think they do better in rooms like bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms...

However, you say you like them in the hallway, and of course that is the only opinion that matters.

Tibb, and sadly, the checkerboard one in that style seems to have been discontinued. At 14" it would have been a little too big for my little hallway. As it is I'm not thrilled about $108 each (first-time buyer's discount), but it could be so much worse.

Why not go to Wayfair, put your price range in, pick a few styles you like, and we'll say yea or nay? There's just too many for us to shop for you. I know this is your day of rest but we heathens can only do so much to help out you Sunday slackers. :P

For a hallway, I vote the flush mount over the semi-flush mount because I always envision things like mattresses being moved in and out and there's no room to maneuver around the lights. But I do only have 8ft 6in ceilings.

By by the way, you all are helping me out here too because I have got our gc on tap to do new lights in bedrooms when he is in the neighborhood for a bigger project. I've got a few months, but maybe if I pick stuff out now I can hope for a discount at some point ;-).

In my area, it's about 300.00 per recessed lighting.

Confession time. About 8 years ago (long before I discovered GW), I decided to replace my hall lights. I bought 3 of these at Home Depot for a pittance. The base is brushed aluminum? For one reason or another I never got around to installing them. Then I decided they weren't good enough and have been sitting in my garage in their boxes. While they are nothing to write home about, they are far better than what is there now, and not a whole lot worse than some of the things I've seen on Wayfair, et al. The mounting ring would need to be sprayed flat black.

Is this too awful to consider? I have turned my coffee table upside down to mimic a ceiling. ;-)

IMO, yes, that is too awful to consider. Perfect for a workshop or garage.

How about this one from HD: flush mount but not a boob light; $20 each; bronze hardware, which I think would look best in your hallway...

Tibb, you like that one? It's basic and inoffensive, but I wonder if the black ring is going to stand out more than the light itself? It's certainly a good price, although one of the HD reviewers said it was too expensive. And what is an integrated LED? Well, obvs it's part of the light itself and doesn't get replaced.

I think $75-125 each is about my range for 3 lights. Not saying I wouldn't spend more (or less) for the right ones. However, this isn't a major room, mostly a chamber through which I pass to get somewhere else. Overall pleasant ambiance is all I'm going for.

I rather like the clear globe one, which also comes with a frosted globe. These two are so inexpensive that perhaps you can pop them in (changing lights is not a big deal and you can do it yourself) and then take your time finding the one you adore.

Check out the Home Depot Web site. They've got a few like that one with the bronze ring, different price ranges. But I think the globe one has kind of a retro look similar to the school house lights.

Tibb, that little light with the clear ribbed glass is adorable, but a bit wee for my hallway. I'm aiming for 10 inches or so.

nosoccer, the smaller lights are cute, but a bit small and I think I'd prefer not to see the bulb. The one with the shells is pretty, but not for me.

Yes, Linelle, too awful. Imo, Home Depot has horrific lighting that looks cheap with one exception, their decorative outdoor motion sensor led lights (they only have two kinds) rock.

Each of my current light fixtures actually has four bulbs and there are three fixtures. The bulbs are 25W each. The stupid fixtures have permanently non-working bulbs. As if the lights aren't UGLY enough on their own, they have bulbs that don't work. I'm sorry to the rest of you who still have them. Normally I don't insult the items in someone else's house, but they're mine, so they're fair game.

All I care about is total wattage equivalency. 60-75W per fixture is what I'm after. The ones I'm considering have 100W max.

As far as IKEA, I have the Calypso and the Alang in a rental. Calypso may be too big, almost 20" but very pretty.

The Capitol Lighting also comes in white glass. I think this is closest to your needs. Price is right, size is right, wattage is right. It doesn't scream schoolhouse as much as the...well....schoolhouse. It's also not a bug-catcher. I like the clear glass, but I've had clear glass wall sconces for years and they get dusty easily.

Mayflowers, I like it. That is definitely the sort of thing that appeals to me. I really can't say I object if the light screams "Schoolhouse!!!" because 1) it's not a negative for me, and 2) I didn't even know what "schoolhouse" meant in terms of a light fixture until recently.

I just got home from the dentist's. We started with the usual "how was your weekend?" type of stuff. I mentioned I'd spent an inordinate amount of time looking at ceiling lights online.
