Lamp for between beds

last modified: 10 years ago

Now that we are in the home stretch with DD's room, we are in need of lighting between the beds. I would love beautiful tole sconces but I don't want to hardwire (in case we move beds, etc). I know I can hang sconces and plug in, but not sure I want to commit to that either. So, I was thinking a floor lamp. DD is only 3, so not reading after bedtime. A floor lamp would give me options. I found a lamp I love (as does DH) but want to make sure it isn't too tall. Here is a pic of beds, small nightstand and a yellow paper marking on wall where top of lamp will be (57" from floor). Also a pic of the floor lamp we are considering. We haven't purchased anything for over beds yet.

Where would you put it though? It's a nice lamp, but not sure where it'd fit because of the table.

Land of Nod has some cute lamps. Look at these two, both on and off

Hard to tell in pics but the nightstand is super small. A candlestick lamp is about all that would fit and the shade would be in the way. I have the nightstand pulled forward. There's plenty of space behind it for a floor lamp. I'll take a pic when I get home of this with a floorlamp we do have to give some perspective.

As long as the base of the floor lamp fits between the back legs of the nightstand, I think it would look fine and be a better choice than a small table lamp. They tend to be tippy.

It looks like it will be the right height and with the pole all the way to one side rather than in the middle of the base, I like it!

So here is another view with a floor lamp we own already. This base can fit under the nightstand or we can move it back. There's about 1-1.5' between wall and nightstand. Nightstand is obviously moveable. This floor lamp is also available in brass. It is 48" tall. Just think the other one is more interesting.

I prefer the other one, and I think the pull to turn it on is maybe a good idea with a child that young.

I, too, prefer the other one. Just want to be sure it isn't too tall! But we really like it so if we get it, we can probably use it elsewhere if it doesn't work out here.

Tib, I think the pull chain will work well too. While I like dimmers best, this is easier for a child.

my concern with the arc floor lamp that is that as tall as it is, it's going to shine right in a child's eyes when then are not in bed (and maybe when they are in bed). I actually like the one you own, as it kind of mimics the size of a table lamp. And if you're going to add things above the beds, I'd be worried the shade of the taller one will be more difficult to work around when placing art. The shorter lamp works between the beds instead of above the headboards.

BTW, the beds and bedding are adorable.

I can envision a sconce on a long vintage shutter, cord behind and plugged in Have done this in my DR, with a shutter on each side of the window. No window treatments necessary.

Sigh. Love, love, love this room! Think the floor lamp is lovely AND safer. My dd is a wild sleeper and when she was about 4 or 5 we were awakened by a loud crash. In her sleep dd had flung her arm across her night table and knocked her porcelain lamp to the floor. What a scary way to wak up! (Dd slept through it, natch!)

What are you thinking over the beds? I cannot wait for your reveal!

I like the floor lamp, but would prefer wall lights for each bed. The floor lamp is the type that is off center, so it could go behind the table with the table pulled out just a bit.

I think the floor lamp is the way to go because safer for children but some might find it unusual to have a lamp behind a table. I would place a doll or trinket box or something to camouflage that it is a floor lamp. I like the black floor lamp better than one with shade with gold interior. Other than safety, floor lamp is also better as it buys you time until you decide what kind of permanent lighting you want in the room.

    Thanks all!

Nightowl, thank you so much for the pics!! Such a help. I need to figure out how to do that for myself. I would rather have sconces as well, but I don't want to commit to that just yet. I will wait until DD is older and see what she needs as time goes on.

Nini, I have no idea what to put over the beds. That will be a decision that will probably be made when I see the perfect thing I must have! So, not for a long while. : )

Olychick, I agree that the shorter lamp gives us more leeway in decorating above the beds. Definitely something we thought of and is what is making me hesitate on the taller lamp. I just think the taller lamp is more interesting. But maybe I should choose function over form!

I would not avoid a table lamp because it could tip over. You can always put museum wax underneath it to keep it in place.

FYI - Sconces were $20 Ikea.

Not a fan of the sconces shown above the beds, but think the floor lamp would be fine. You could stack some books on the table and it would hide the column somewhat. I think you should be careful that the size of the shade doesn't overpower the small table. If it isn't needed for reading a low-watt bulb should work for now.

I like the floor lamp you are thinking of buying and think it will work well in the space and be safer.......we also had a wild, arm-flinging sleeper (DS) who knocked over a glass table lamp on a night stand whilst sleeping at his grandparents' house. The lamp was smashed to smithereens, but luckily no injuries sustained.

    The beds look adorable, btw!

I agree that an overhead lamp can be too bright for nighttime reading - we have something similar in our spare bedroom & it is bothersome. I put a less bright bulb in it, but it still seems too much sometimes.

I have to say I thought immediately of a table lamp too when I saw the sweet set up & colors. Something vintage in wood (or something else that won't shatter) might be a good choice.

    Here's what sprang to mind:

Have you considered looking for a larger table for between the beds? This one seems a bit too small, both in size and scale. I'm thinking that might make finding a lamp much easier.

    Thanks so much!

carolb, I would love a table lamp but that would entail getting a new table. It is super small. Probably not my most practical purchase but I loved the lines! I do love that bunny lamp though.

tvq, unfortunately I just purchased this table for this purpose. I love the gallery tray on it and the shape. Yes, totally impractical size, but good for a 3 year old! There are also other furniture pieces at play in the room that make this nightstand a good size for right now. But a bigger stand would solve my lamp problem!

Still debating. We really like the lamp so might purchase it and use elsewhere if necessary. Hmmmm....

The bedroom is scrumptious, theclose. And I think the lamp you have shown in your initial post is perfect for the room. Go for it!

Here is a pottery barn photo - maybe a wall inspiration for you
