Something old, something new--kitchen reveal

In gratitude for all the amazing help I have received on this forum, here is my kitchen reveal.

BEFORE

AFTER

We annexed the adjoining laundry room so the space increased considerably. We kept the orginal to the house (1925) windows (something old) but moved the ones over the sink down so I can reach to open them and see out of them. This is one of the biggest improvements.

We kept the original Hoosier style cabinets (something blue) and had the pull out countertop re-enameled. They are painted Benjamin Moore niagra falls using the advance paint.

The rest of the cabinets are new from Barkers (something new). The countertops are 3 cm Carrara marble.

The sink is the kohler stages 45. I am very happy with this splurge. Our sink run is shallower than standard (old house) so we put the faucets on the sides. This arrangement has worked out very well and having two faucets is one of my favorite things about the new kitchen.

The original kitchen had wood flooring orginal to the house so our gc wove in new wood and refinished the floor. It's a great match.

The backsplash on the sink run is 2 cm Carrara marble slab. The backsplash on the range run is Heath ceramics tile from their seconds and overstock room at a considerable discount. The blue clock is limited edition from Heath

Thank you all so much for letting me "borrow" your knowledge for my kitchen remodel.

I am happy to try to answer questions.

crl, I love your kitchen!!! New/Old/Improved, but it has not lost any of the character that made it adorable even in the Before shots. So glad you chose carrara and also used it on the sink backsplash. Can you give us a peek into your breakfast room?

This looks beautiful! You must love it.

Question: Are those the Delta Trinsic faucets? I'm thinking of getting those, wonder what you think of them?

The breakfast room is my five year old's art room and it holds the dog crate so it's not exactly reveal worthy. But here it is.

Yes, they are Delta trinsic. I am very happy with them. I did not want a high arc faucet and I really wanted the single lever on top as I find that the most functional. That didn't leave me a lot of choices and I worried that these would be too modern, but I think they look nice and they certainly work well, IMO.

My gc said he liked them so much he was going to put them on his list for his kitchen remodel. He felt they were really good quality for a pretty low price and he agreed that it is so nice to be able to turn them on with just the back of your hand or wrist when your hands are yucky.

    Very nice, I love it.

I am going to keep your sink faucet in mind; I don't want a true high arch, but not sure how it will work with the style I'm going for. But I like them!

Your home looks inviting to cook in!

What brand / model did you use for your stackable laundry?

Lovely! Beautiful combination of old, new & blue. I am definitely scrolling back & forth and noticing more details as I read comments. Genius on the broom closet & files. Love the Carrara backsplash detail. It's obvious all your choices & decisions were very well thought out. Again, I am amazed at the talent on this forum.

Oh I'm so glad to see this! I had wondered about you and hoped things were finishing up well.

It looks so great! My favorite part is your pot rack and clock;) I remember you debated on having two sinks, and I imagine having two faucets serves a lot of the same function. A couple questions, could you post a few closeups of the range wall? Especially the slideout range hood and the tile. In the wider shot it looks to have some variation, but in the closeup of the pot rack I don't see it.

It looks like a bright, functional kitchen that is also beautiful! Enjoy.

I love the crisp blue and white! The wall and cabinet colors are perfect, how did you choose them? I also noticed that fabulous light in the art nook, I'm sure your little one is inspired. Congratulations!

Close ups of the tile backsplash and slide out hood.

On choosing colors, the new barker cabinets only came in two whites and I went with the crisper, more true white because I like that. I painted a ridiculously large number of paint samples trying to choose colors for the original Hoosier style cabinets and the wall. I already had the Heath clock so I needed to coordinate with that. And after much dithering, and posting here, and accosting neighbors for opinions we ended up with these two blues.

Love it! I might be a tad biased but I really love the sink and Carrara worktops! Old and new mesh together perfectly. You have done a bloomin amazing job

Yes, also the mail slot. Love the mail slot, though the magazines don't fit through easily so our ail carrier just drops them on the front porch. Oh well.

Looks beautiful! Blue and white are my favorite combination. I think my island is going to be blue! How do you like your carrara? I'm 99% sure I'm going with quartz for the mental health of my family, but my heart still loves the marble the best and feels a bit like I'm selling out.

I am quite happy with the Carrara. It was much cheaper than anything else I liked. And we like antiques and such so we decided we would be okay with patina. So far it has a few scratches and etches, but no stains at all. And just to be clear, I make no effort to baby the counter at all. I have found drops of salsa that sat overnight from someone getting a snack after I went to bed--no damage from that. And various other drips and such that didn't get cleaned up quickly and no damage from those either. I think all of my etches have been associated with lemons/lemon juice.

Also, My gc left me with some fine grit sandpaper and showed me how to get etches out. And it can be re-honed in place if we decide it looks too trashed or we need to sell the house (not in our plans, but you never know).

I have long been lusting after your gorgeous Hoosier-style wall and now I am lusting for the rest of your kitchen. I'm so thrilled for you to have those lovely windows that you can actually see out of although I'm sure your eyes rest on the beautiful backsplash. And that broom closet with paper storage really is a genius use of that space.

Your GC did an amazing job melding together the old and new wood floors.

It's always wonderful to see someone update their kitchen, create something beautiful and functional, while remaining true to their home's style.

You deserve a big gold star!

What a fantastic kitchen. I love what you did with it. How do you like having the two faucets on your sink? I would think that it would almost be like having two sinks and that two people could work side by side.

Nothing Left to Say thanked ediblekitchen
  • 10 years ago

The breakfast nook is in a couple of pictures above. A booth would not work as the room has either a door or a window (with sills below the level of a bench) on every wall, plus some original features like the mail slot, telephone nook and corner cupboard that take up virtually all the wall space.

But we have a spacious dining room and that is where we eat our meals.

I love the huge sink with two faucets. I can continue cooking while other people wash hands and grab water to drink, which reduces my frustration trying to get dinner on the table. I have even used both faucets at the same time all by myself a few times--running hot water to soak a pan while rinsing fruit with cold, for example. I have never had two sinks, but I think this must be close in function.

You did a wonderful job! Since I too have an old house and recently redid the kitchen, I fully appreciate the issues you faced with yours. I applaud your determination to save what you could and the end product is nothing less than spectacular!

A really, really brilliant makeover, crl_! The hoosier wall of course, but the small ledge on the backsplash, lowering the windows, the choice of pendants, the overall layout, the colors -- I am unable to pick a favorite element.

Could you post the overall size of the kitchen? It has to give inspiration to all those looking to improve a smaller, older kitchen.

The kitchen is now right at about 9 X 14, which seems quite spacious to me as in our first house the kitchen was 8 X 8 with two doors and a window! But I agree it is still small by GW standards. I have more than enough storage and counterspace and honestly wouldn't choose for it to be any bigger.

And thank you all for the kind words! I owe so much to GW; the amount of information here and the willingness to help complete strangers is truly amazing.

I'm really impressed! I love the Hoosier. I'm building my own credenza on the wall and love how it's coming out.

You really made great use of space. The windows are beautiful, the floor is wonderful, it's cool and calm.

(And people laughed when I put a 2nd, motion sensing faucet in the MBR for my cats.)

I hope you enjoy this for a very long time.

Sharon, that cabinet was originally a built-in ironing board. It was converted to shallow shelving before we moved in. I used it as spice storage. Sorry I cannot post a picture as we ended up sellling the house because we moved out of state.
