New Family Room

Hello! Long time Houzz'er, first time posting:) I am re-decorating my family room, taking out a wall to our front room and changing our TV viewing area. I am wondering if someone could help me with furniture placement. I would love to have a seating area in front of my fireplace but I have a bad habit of over-furniture-ing rooms so I am seeking some advice. Thank you! Michelle

Two separate seating areas. Float a sectional sofa with the shorter end by the door wall and longer side in front of the fireplace. In the other end of the room past where the wall was removed, create a conversation area with four upholstered swivel chairs around a round coffee table or ottoman . This way the chairs can swivel toward the fireplace or TV.

What a lovely space you will have. Do not think of furnishing it until it is finished. Is the main living area to be carpeted w/ the wood flooring in the adjacent space or will you have hardwood flooring thruout the whole new area.

Go with a light to medium finish on the wood floor. You will see every little piece of thread or hair & every footprint if going with a dark floor.

Would it be possible to move the tv to the other side of the fireplace (the wall to be removed area). That seems like a darker more cozy spot. I would put a game /dining table and chairs at the opposite end where the deep seat window is located. Could you create a banquet in that location?

Sweetwater, thank you! Unfortunately the TV my husband is looking at is too big:) I also would like the fireplace to be a more focal point. Thank for replying to me!!!

Sandradclark and Martha, thank you I am very excited. Thank you for replying! I love your ideas! I am putting hardwood floor in the room with the new opening. It matches what is already in my kitchen, dining room and foyer. I would like carpet in the fireplace/tv room. I do very much want to put chairs in front of the fireplace! This is my hardwood.

I’m quarantine bored. Are you guys? I realized I never posted my “finished” room! LOL so after tidying up a bit here is how it looks now. Remaining to do: fireplace setting area coffee table and deco on the wall above the big antique buffet thing:)

Anyway! Thank you for your input! Let me know if you have ideas for above the buffet! LOL I dream of an antique mirror collection but am struggling to find several, original, not mass produced, wood framed mirrors:) But I guess the hunt is glad the fun right?! Stay safe all!
