Backsplash

I've looked forever and think I'm liking this. The grout is a bit off for my liking, opinions appreciated. I'm not sure of size and pattern yet. I'd love your input!

Thank you thank you Mayflowers and everyone else for your responses. I knew what you would all say, as I thought it was busy too!

No, way too busy with the granite and I do get the mixing of decorating styles, really I do, but I think your cabinets are too refined (in a good way) for that look. The cabinets and granite give a sophisticated look, at least in my opinion, and the backsplash just doesn't work.

Well, its your kitchen, and we want to be sure you'll be smiling every day when you see it. May I suggest you look around a bit more? Google your granite and look at images of kitchens with similar cabinets, that look pretty to you.

When you say you are tropical, it makes me think of Mother of Pearl mosaic backsplash tile, that could be pretty in your space. To my eye it is still a little busy, but there are many shades and tile sizes to choose from. You'd want sheets with little color variation, with or without grout spaces, and nothing too shiny.

I hate showing images of what to avoid...but steer clear of tiny and shiny if possible.

If you want stone, a crema marfil subway might work.

A local store has ordered me a subway sample in ivory and urban putty in mat. We shall see what that does. Thank you for all the help

Same thing everyone else is saying… no! The colors of your kitchen/granite remind me of my old house. We did a mini brick and I loved how it just added texture and let the busy granite be the star. I'll look for a pic… I found an old pic where I was showing the seam, but you get the idea with the cabinet color/granite/backsplash.

I think we are all in agreement: A simple backsplash that's not shiny. (Can't see mother of pearl, for example, with your cabinets and granite, which are more rustic or earthy IMO.

I'm anxiously awaiting the sample daltite bone subway in matte that has been ordered. Now if I may, can I ask my next big question? I'm replacing the floor. Wood is out because I have some wood now that I don't want to remove, nor can I get more of what I have. My question:. Since the granite is busy, does my floor have to be more simple/lack movement?

Found this on houzz. I hope the owner is okay with my posting it. Its crema marfia subway and it does look good here. Thanks for the suggestion! Of course, lighting can change things. I need to get a sample of this. The granite is a very good comparison to mine.. Cabinets are pretty much spot on to mine. Still wondering and worrying on floor choices

Don't anyone dare say "Do what you love!" Not on my watch. ;)

That would normally be me but in this case, the tile does not work at all with the granite. Too busy with busy. (So not on my watch either.) You need something less busy for the granite. I would personally look at a crackle ceramic tile.

    Honestly, find another designer. :)

I did a smaller subway style tumbled stone backsplash in my for we kitchen with busy granite. It worked well. Sorry I don't have any better pics at the moment- these are from when we sold the house:

I think for your floor you could get away with something that has a bit of movement but not too much. You can do a travertine IF you can find one that has all the same size tile for example.

Here's some wonderful backsplash tile. I used it with my busy typhoon bordeaux Jeffrey Courtgranite

Cpartist...travertine isn't a fav of mine for various reasons. I'm thinkng 20 inch tile in porcelain. Hubby loves one as I do, but not sure it works in our home. I'm told the granite is not on the tile, so not to worry. I'm feeling nuts with these projects.

Would you consider a plank tile? What can you match your existing wood again?

curious why you can't have more wood. We added wood flooring to existing and you couldn't tell the difference. In another house, for some reason, the joists started running the other way in a room we wanted to wood floor. Our floor guy made a great perimeter about 12 inches wide in a lighter wood and then ran the interior wood in the square the proper way. It looked like a purposeful install. Ha.

ETA -- or add a tile mosaic entry to the kitchen and then start wood again.

This tile will be in the kitchen, breakfast area, laundry room, closet, pantry, 2 of the baths, halls on both sides of house (split floor plan), and path like area that runs from master wing to guest wing between dining room and great room. I don't want the wood in those areas. I'd actually like to remove the wood, but it's not in the budget and its in good shape. If it helps understand the area, it's your typical Florida home floor plan, split bedrooms, empty nester type home. The wood is in all bedrooms, DR, great room.

Mark Rachel by plank do you mean wood look? If so, that would look like 2 woods to me. I'm not sure I want that.

    last modified: 10 years ago

Cpartists...there is a dealer for the Jeffrey tile in ft Myers I'm going to check that out!

Maybe these pics help. The quality is iPad bad but you get the idea how the tiled areas flow in main part of house. The tile you see is the one we love, but scares me because of movement.

I mean a plank size. Something like 6"x30" instead of the transitional square tiles.

I'm told the granite is not on the tile, so not to worry.

I so disagree with this! A tile floor and counter top are two stone surfaces in a parallel plane that take up a good portion of the room. Your eye goes from one to the other, so they do need to coordinate. As do the undertones, which I think may be off in your tile sample. Take a photo of the floor tile with the granite. Also check to see what the variation is. When we bought our tile, we thought we were getting all similar tiles, the ones with more movement, but some were almost solid. We didn't know that our tile was V4, the highest variation, because we only saw one tile.

We have warm colors in our LR/DR like you--our upholstered furniture is blood red and camel--so we couldn't use any gray undertones. Our tile adjoins hardwood and our cabinets are cherry so I didn't use the wood plank tile. I don't really like directional tile throughout the home. Large format squares are calming--these are 18 x 18".

Here is a picture of the tile I used. It is more of a plank look but not wood. I have similar cabinets and granite as yours. Also I am in Naples area.

One benefit to using a wood-look tile that matches your wood floor is that you would eliminate another source of contrast. The floors would become part of the backdrop.

Cmm...what is your tile called? Is that by chance Sonoma valley or Sonoma wind?Your granite appears to have less gold than mine, butI do love your floor.

    Thanks the tile is

    Tesoro tile (brand)

    Earthen Essence (style)

    Pearl (color)

We installed 2000 square feet through our whole house. A painful process to live through but worth it in the end

I found the tile at Hadingers in Naples but ordered it through my installer at a Ft Myers store at a better price.

My backsplash is Horus Arts crackle.

We used American Tile distributors at 11701 metro parkway Ft Myers 33966

Our installer used them. Our salesperson Carmen was very helpful. Good luck!

Cmm, American iis on my list. They were closed last Saturday so I haven't made it yet. My installer suggested it.

Crema marfil and travertine have pink undertones, so you'll want to be careful with your gold tones. I can see the pink in every example posted here.

Love the look of the crema marfil, especially. but both look really nice.

Cmm...I got a sample of Tesoro pearl today. I do like it. The sample has a bit of gold in it, very little. A bit of gold is good for me, probably more than my samples show. It's had to tell from your pics, but when looking at your overall floor, do you see a bit of gold? Here's a pic of the samples. The larger sample, mounted on the board ,is quite different from the single 18 nch piece.

any and all opinions appreciated. I'm still lost on backsplash.

these were taken in incandescent light. I will post some in natural lighting tomorrow. The large grayish area is in 2 areas, and not really focal points.

    im just not sure

Did you bring the tile sample home? It looks good in the third pic but take the photos from further back.

Mayflowers yes, I brought it home. I will take pcs further back in both artificial and natural light. Thank you! I so appreciate any advice.

    last modified: 10 years ago

These are further away, but not sure if they help. iPad pics are horrid. I moved into the wood area because I felt my current tile was distracting. This tile has a variation rating of 3... You are looking at a board and a single piece. The single piece looks totally diff to me. I'm back to wanting a12x24. This tile doesn't come in a 20x20. My existing til appears much like this in the pic. It is not. It's very simple without variation.

    these are artificial light

12 x 24 is good. I like the tile. It reads gray. I would have to repaint that bright gold. Gold paint often has green undertones.

Can you put the tile on the floor near the cabinets and take a pic from farther back, showing the counter too?

    debbie12153 thanked User

Mayflowers...IMO it reads a bit gray. It's a concern for me. I'll try to get those pics tomorrow, if not this evening. iPad is about to die on me

    last modified: 10 years ago

I agree on the paint, but no clue what to go with. Here are more pics. I'll try to get the same pics in natural light tomorrow. The tile is going in many areas, not just the kit. The kitchen is not big. I will take a full pic of kitchen tomorrow. I miss my big Indiana kitchen, even though I dont really cook.

At least the amount of movement is right if you need to keep looking. It's quiet enough to go through the other parts of your home. I see nothing glaringly off with the counter when I look at this on two devices. I may see a tad pink undertone when you hold the tile up. The gold in your granite seems to be more of a golden brown than a yellow gold, and it has a lot of gray, so I think if the tile reads gray in some light it may be okay.

Tile flooring should last a few decades so I wouldn't base a decision on the rust carpet and gold paint. I would slowly eliminate all rust and gold to modernize your home. So what about that rust carpet? I didn't see the LR mentioned as being tiled.

    last modified: 10 years ago

I don't have rust carpeting you might be referring to a microfiber rug I used to more or less hide current tile. Yes granite has a good amount of black/gray and much of the gold is more golden brown. Paint is easy to change, to what is the question. Here are 2 pics with all natural light. It's a cloudy day, so dim.

Debbie. Here are some more pics. My granite has rust or copper tones but some may consider it gold. It is called Aries White. Dog photo bomb is a Weimaraner. Some more flooring pictures as well. Hope you are not too overwhelmed. I think your granite is great!

Cmm...your kitchen area is so like mine, area. I see the gold, but more than that the pattern of your granite. Your floor works well. I'm leaning toward your tile. I just want to confirm I can do 1/8 grout lines. My other possible for tile is Sonoma Wind, that can be 1/8 grout lines. I hate cleaning grout. I live with 3 dogs and a sloppy hubby.

I am a bit overwhelmed, but all will work out. Your photo bomb goes well with your tile!

i lean toward gold tones and darker wood. To me it's more timeless.

    thank you!
