No, very 80's.

I am on the fence, I love navy- just unsure about this shade with the trim. My husband loves it. But I just was hoping for some feedback before we paint the wall (this is just a swatch I painted)

I love it! Navy is a strong color, and I have used it in each of my last 3 homes. Very striking

It's the navy I like, and the trim color I don't like. Paint the trim!

The wall color is great. The trim needs to be painted. How about a high-gloss grey, like BM Pewter?

As for painting the trim, I know it will look better- but it is just something we cant take on right now because not only is our trim oak, but all of our doors are solid oak as well- so we would have to have switch those out for white as well- and we just are not in a position to do that right now. Thanks tho! :)

I think your pic is not showing the true color it look very blue, but after looking it up I see it is more of a grey color. I think it has too much blue in it....I recommend something a touch lighter and with a green tone to it. The blue tone is bringing out the yellow in your wood.If you go with a green toned grey it will warm up the wood and neutralize the yellow of the oak. Benjamin Moore Crisp Romaine is the tone I was thinking

I voted for 'just okay', the blue and oak tones are competing with each other.

I was looking at the little piece of white baseboard that is near the door in the bathroom I like it .

If you look at the pictures above it is gorgeous with your trim. It is a certain look. Painting the trim white is gorgeous also with a different look than with the stained woodwork. After looking at the pics above I vote to keep the stained woodwork anyway instead of considering painting. The finishing touches will complete the look. I think it is an awesome look!

The blue tones in the paint against the orange tones in the wood are complimentary colors on the color wheel so they both pop against one another...if you don't want the oak trim as noticeable, than paint the walls in a color closer to the warmer side of the wheel ..but I really like the pictures that were posted above...I think it works well.

I like the oak trim and I like it because of the low maintenance! So much to do to keep up with maintenance and painting anyway. Besides I think it looks nice. Builders I am sure like painted because they don't have to use as high a grade of wood- which means less expensive!
I think a large canvas with photography printed on it would look great on your wall. I just took some beautiful snow scenes that I am planning on having made for myself for a wall that is darker in my own home. I think the white look will be great or perhaps I will do my photography of a white horse.

I think it would depend on the lighting in the room. It's a dark color, unless there are lots of windows and doors, or you want a dark room, as for a theater. Do the walls dominate the room, or are they broken up by openings?

I too have oak trim throughout. I had my family room this blue color for a while then changed because the oak trim stood out too much. If this were me...I would paint the room more of an earthy color which blends well with the trim. I like new chestnut from benjamin Moore .

This room has a lot of natural light. Just to give you an idea this room takes up the entire left side of our home. It is a long rectangle and each of the 'end' walls both have very large windows. The long wall to the right also has two openings that lead to our hallway and kitchen. The long left wall is just a solid wall. We are considering breaking up that wall with a see through room divider (to separate the living and dining space) and paint it in the colour of our hall way (which is weimaraner by BM) to break up the bold colour...but this is just an idea if we go with this colour.

Paint the trim a cream. You can make your own chalk paint which is wonderful for covering the grain in the oak..

It's only paint- I say go for it and if you don't like it repaint next year. It's the easiest thing to change in a room.

What do your floors and furnishings look like? People will not be staring at just your trim and paint color but rather the full room.

I say Yes! The issue is how it relates to your surroundings!

Why is everybody wanting to paint wood ??????? It is just a trend and is a ton of work to bring back the beauty of wood.

We live in a 1925 house with the original unpainted oak trim and other oak built-ins. I've never been a fan of golden oak, but I wasn't going to one to paint 88 year old unpainted wood. I used Sherwin Williams Windsor Greige. I really like how it looks. I feel like it cooled down the golden of the oak, just a bit.

The wall color is beautiful. I would paint the trim BM "Mascarpone".

What else is going in this room? My first thought is go lighter. Two for comparison.

Love what judyg posted, especially the soft green. I do not like that color of wood but the green changes the whole look and complements the woodwork perfectly. The other posting above does well with the woodwork. And I think the dark blue works well also. It is just a shame to paint beautiful woodwork.

trelbob, gotta say I always wonder the same thing. Nothing was asked about the trim, why go there? Why not answer what they asked and not risk insulting people that like their trim? I think the color picked is fine, although I do love the blues in feeny's arts and craft pic as well.(The green too.).

The question from us should be what else is in the area..I always say pick the paint color LAST...after all furniture, fabrics, window treatments & rugs are chosen..without seeing those items there can be no judgement or even advice. Otherwise we are just throwing so much "you know what" against the wall. So our question should be what does the entire room look like (pics of all walls & furnishings) what do you have in adjoining rooms. And the question that has been asked here..do YOU like it.

I've been seeing this trend all over the place and have been considering it in my home on an accent wall. It might be overwhelming on all the walls unless you have eclectic taste, but you can compliment the wood tones and navy with gold, cream and coral accessories. I say keep it!

Blue and orange are opposite each other on the colour wheel so painting your walls blue will play up the orange tone of the oak. If this is what you like them that's perfect! If you're looking to downplay the oak then you're better choosing something more similar in tone like a warm shade. Good luck on your project!
