Our kitchen plan

Wondering what all of you think. I was hoping for more symmetry around the stove, does it look ok. Also considering a prep sink, since we have two cooks most of the time. Where should it be placed in the island? Give me your comments everybody.

I just finished my kitchen. I would put stainless range hood instead of the wood. we put our deep square sink on the far right side of the island (if you are behind island facing out of kitchen ) and we couldn't be happier. you plan looks great!

I think the layout is very usable. I'd only change a few things:

    1. take the cabinets out from above the sink. More light will get into the room and you won't feel like something is going to fall on your head while you're washing spinach.

    1. take the rest of the cabinets up to the ceiling or to a soffit. Space above cabinets collects dust and isn't terribly useful except for collecting "decorations" which then have to be dusted but aren't contributing to that gnawing sense that your house isn't clean (ask me how I know).

    3. make your island longer. You only need 3 to 4 ft of clearance on the end so the extra space may as well be useful.

    4. consider making part of the island table height instead of counter height. The short people in your house will be able to work at that part of the island in comfort.

I hope you can add plumbing for a sink in the island. I would put the sink across from the stove so your prep stuff will be near your cooking zone. A disposal in the island would be a luxury you could consider.
Even out the top of the cabinets on the stove wall....and either add a soffit or go all the way up (you can use false fronts way up there in the useless zone).
That flooring may always appear dirty...maybe use something less patterned.

The ceiling is going to be sloped 9ft on the left to 14ft on the right. Doing a soffit or extending the cabinets to the ceiling won't work. I do think we will eliminate the cabinets above the window, after looking at photos I do like that clean look. Getting plumbing to the island won't be a problem, we are on a raised and have easy access under the kitchen.

I don't mind with the idea of a longer island but be aware that 3' clearance is completely inadequate - min. 48" if you have 2 people working, plus open appliance doors, traffic flow past seating, etc. We are going in excess of 48" in order to avoid crowding and keep a more open concept and "Feng Shui" friendly work space.

@Rusty Empire, how much clearance is there at the end of your island (the window end)? To me it looks excessive, especially since that will probably not be the busy end of the kitchen. If anything, the extra space should go by the fridge/microwave/sink end since that pathway will be very busy.

Houzz has a good article about island clearance zones [here[(https://www.houzz.com/magazine/how-much-room-do-you-need-for-a-kitchen-island-stsetivw-vs~52264430).

This is the floor plan. As you see the island can't be much larger with the family room close by. We did change the corner near the window, and decreased the window just a little bit so that we could put a cabinet on the right side of the window.

    Here is the floor plan

hmm, seeing it in context helps. How would you feel about a U-shaped kitchen?

My edit is crude but should give you the idea. I've worked in a kitchen like this and it's very efficient.

Build a different house. The plan just isn't good. Weird angles only ever look good from the overhead floor plan. Real life living with them is awkward. And everything else in the u inverse is square, leading to lots of wanted space.

We have thought many time what the crazy builder was thinking when he included all these crazy angles. Moving and building is not an option.

That rendering is misleading in the way the space looks, but now that I see the plan, it's clearer.

I would place the prep sink so that someone could stand at the left end of the island and work (facing the fridge). Having only 3'7" between the stove and island is already tight. Make it so that the prep sink is in the corner--convenient to the cook and for someone helping, but out of the traffic on the end. I'd also make the island narrower to allow more space between it and the stove wall.
