Nice room; seems to have plenty of natural light for day.

I'm fond of ceiling fan lights -- do consider one and look for one with wood or wood look fan blades that will go with your décor.

you might want to consider lighting from Restoration Hardware that uses edison bulbs. Here's an example, but you should check out the website.

Something with a rustic feel would look lovely.

The china cabinet is what is too busy. It darkens and dates the room. No matter what light fixture you choose, it will be upstaged by that giant piece.

Yes the lighting fixture is way to heavy.

i would do a drum with the candelabra underneath. Mixing the old with the new.

Hang the light portion closer to the table. It should be about 3 feet from the top of the table. I also am in favor of down lights for dining. I like the one blueocean66 posted, but do check out Restoration Hardware.

I agree that the light is too busy, and I am mystified by the wealth of equally busy suggestions! I'd try to go for something that simplifies the profile of the light, perhaps a ball or drum, if you can find something that feels at home in your style.

Try removing the shades from your chandelier and see if you like that look better.

I agree that it's the hutch overpowering the room and a lighter color that would let it blend better into the background would help. Then maybe two of the elegant chandelier suggested by Jillian, depending on their actual size. If you choose Edison bulbs as suggested above, keep in mind that they give off a very yellow light.

I would soften the look with a crystal chandelier.

Whatever you choose, please don't put a fan :D

Yes, the light shoud be pretty much 3 feet from the table, which will make it "compete" less with the detail on the hutch behind it. I like the idea of a Drum fixture in light color to blend with the walls and because of the simplicity of the design, drawing the attention to the china and furniture behind it. (If possible, consider moving the speakers - or wahtever the black boxes on top of the hutch are - to the center of the hutch where it will not show as much.)

A fan??? Above a dining table??? Oh no, please no!

Please post a pic without the shades and Dining Room fixtures look best at 30"-32" above table. I see either no shades or fabric shades, to soften the look.

I love drum shades, but would be to heavy with this furniture and no fan for sure!

Please don't paint the hutch. Here is a pic from the late Charles Faudree. He would often fabric the inside to soften the look.

And I wanted to see the chandelier without the globes to see if you could add shades and or paint. This is what I had in mind.

I totally agree with bellburgmaggie! The hutch is beautiful; don't ruin it with paint! You could even simplify the look a bit by stacking the plates, etc. , to get less of a busy look, but otherwise it is a beautiful piece of furniture.

Yes! DO NOT ruin your perfect wood hutch with cheap chalk paint.

Annie Sloan chalk paint isn't cheap! But I know it's not everyone's cup of tea!

Is your hutch two pieces? If so you could remove the upper piece and I think that would lighten the room. I love your blue plates! You could do an arrangement of the plates on the wall.

Omgoodness...I love your hutch and blue plates...I actually think you should paint the walls white...add the same bright blue drapes with a white banding for some high contrast..add a black chandelier or as someone suggested a Chrystal chandelier it will look just beautiful. I love the homey feel of your space.
