Help choosing a new media stand

10 years ago
We are getting ready to purchase a larger media stand for our living room but I need help deciding what will look best. I'm thinking 72", but I'm undecided on finish. I could do dark wood again and brighten with accessories or do a media stand with a lighter finish.

    Hi, maybe something in a white finish that would contrast with (yet complements) the darker (stain grade) pieces plus tie in with the other white trim in and around your space?

    These consoles are from Restoration Hardware and I believe are around 80" in width. How wide is your TV? The new console should measure at least 25% wider, if possible.

    Here's another one from Hooker Furniture....though may not be an exact match, it looks like it may still have a complementary finish to your existing wood pieces (definitely inquire about bringing a finish sample home if possible to compare).

    What's nice about it is that though it's still a darker finish, the glass on the doors gives it a lighter feel. Its style also seems to blend in well with your existing cased goods. This measures 92" in width....which looks like you do have the wall space for that, correct?

    Btw, when re-reading your original post....I realized that it sounds like you may already have something in mind already for a media console. If so, perhaps you can post a picture of it so we can give our opinions, other suggestions, etc.

    I went shopping last Friday and saw a few I liked. I'm just concerned about adding more dark brown. But I'd also be concerned with adding a light wood too.

    I think you're fine with the dark brown console. You may want to add some sofa pillows and throws, and some art work to brighten the space.

    I was going to say, that the blues of your pillows are too dark, and the green too muddy. You need lighter and brighter solids, that you can pick out from your print pillow. Think clear colors, like azure blue, turquoise, leaf green.

    One more comment, sorry, I read from a designer blog that if you try and directly match a color from a fabric, it doesn't quite work right, but if you match the color from the "wrong side" the colors magically work better in the space. Just a thought.

    Everything in your home is dark wood. Maybe it's time to think outside the brown box.

    Teamaltese- I don't understand what you're saying about my colors exactly. The pillow is velvet so there is variation in light and darkness because of the texture. However, my pillows are turquoise and leaf green and coordinate with the art. Not sure if it's showing up differently on your monitor or maybe I've missed something.

    @leelee that's very pretty.

    I would go with a darker cabinet, to compliment your furnishings. The 2nd picture without doors would be best (less wood). The pillows go with the picture - which doesn't go with your furniture. I think you need a picture with some "autumn" colors in it, then add pillows/throw.

    Agree with all screens not duplicating true color.

    If you go light it will blend in with the wall & the TV will stand out more. If you go medium to dark the TV will become part of the overall picture (which is what I would want).

    It's probably my monitor. I also have brown furniture, and turquoise and leaf green really help lighten it up. So unlike my monitor, you're fine!
