I have the flip side of your kitchen but I think a similar backsplash in glass tile in your shades would be pretty. Here's mine.

Avoid a "busy" design that will look cluttered and clash with the classic look you have begun creating. You could add a single narrow row of solid gray tile atop and along with the countertop, choosing a gray shade within your countertop, and add solid white (or paint) above that; alternately, stay with the same solid gray tile (or paint) shade you choose from countertop to cabinets.

Any kind of multicolored pattern or print will look odd with that countertop.

I was thinking of larger gray tiles. With the dark cabinets and floor, would I need to use a light gray tile? Or can I go with a medium gray? Overall, the countertop appears light, and there is good lighting in the kitchen.


Also, would gray tiles with a listello work? The listello would be just a couple inches tall. So, from the counter going up, there would be gray tile, listello and then more gray tile to the upper cabinets. I found a listello with long and short mosaic pieces of stainless steel and white glass that perfectly matches the countertop. But, would the listello look too busy and break up the space too much? There are 18 inches vertically from the countertop to the upper cabinets and quite a bit more space behind my range.

Our cabinets are very similar in color. I love the cream colored subway tile we used. Something like this would look great in your kitchen!

I think something like the color artdecorl used only use same color grout. You do not want your backsplash competing with your counter top. Try painting a foam board the color gray you want and the color cream in the top. See which one you like.

Dina, yes, I thin you are on the right track. I agree that the photo rated cork posted is close, but keep the grout the same color. You have a lot going on in the granite and don't want the same in your backsplash. I like the idea of a thin line of stainless pieces to break it up though. I did that in my former kitchen at about 2/3 up on the backsplash

Kmkane, do you have a photo of your old kitchen that you can share?

Can the listello be 1/3 up from the bottom? For me, 1/3 up would mean the listello wouldn't get broken up by the outlets.

I don't at the moment because I don't have my laptop with me, but you can go to this link, and scroll through until you get to the kitchen. I sold the house a few years ago. Now that I look back at it, the line of stainless goes just under the outlets, and is thinner than in the photo you showed. Also, my subways as laird in the brick pattern, not stacked. Still, it gives you an idea. I do like the photo you jus posted though, and no, to me, it's does not look choppy. Glass seafoam colored 2x16 tiles would be beautifully unexpected with your dark cabinets and red barstools.

I think the tile should be subtle, but also unique and one idea is to go with simple white subway but add a great tile/design behind the stove and it will draw your eye as a focal point. Designs below may not be your choice, but wanted to provide pictures so you could see if you liked the concept.

Would this large (9x18) gray tile work? Would the listello (only three rows of the random mosaic blend) work with it?

I would like the listello to be about 4-6 inches up from the countertop. That leaves a big area behind the range where the 9x18 gray tiles would fill the space. Will that look weird or boring?

I am not sure either would go. I am not a fan of the glass tiles, I think they compete with the counter top. One pattern is enough in a kitchen. The grey is a little over powering. You really want your back splash to melt into the back ground.

Go with simple and elegant. You cannot lose.

if you go back an look at the photos of my kitchen, you will see that I built a small shelf above the range to make sure that space was kept from being boring. That often is what happens behind the range - the tiles get piled up and it looks dead. It's also why people add designs behind the range. I'd rather have a useful shelf. You can do that easily by screwing one in to the two cabinets on either side of the range. See mine in the link above.

I would recommend using a gray stone that is in 3x6 like a subway tile., Keeping with the contemporary style, and timeless looking!

Are larger tiles also contemporary? I was trying to minimize grout lines because the granite is a busy speckled pattern. Will larger tiles look off?

IF the grout matches the tile, you don't have to worry so much about grout lines.

I'm not a pro, but I don't see where 3 x 6 tiles are any more contemporary than 9 x 18 tiles. CJ's Creations could you comment on that for us please?

Use the listello installed vertically behind the range as an accent. Horizontal mosaic stripes are overused IMO.

4x12 Seafoam green tile would look great with your dark cabinets.
