Agreed with Kelley, is there something specific that you dislike? Personally to update the area I think you should remove the carpet from your stairs and update them with hardwood. Remodeling a staircase can make a world of difference to the look and feel of a home.

I would suggest paint the stair treads black to match the rail and lay a sisal runner up the stairs. No runner on wood stairs is dangerous!

I've had bare stairs for over 2 years - not dangerous.

I like it how it is but I would definitely make the stairs hardwood

Remove everything and take photos while standing at the two extreme ends of the entry/hallway. Please include the floor in the pix. Shop your home for other large pieces of casegoods that you might use here. Comment here to add pix.

Definitely need to get rid of carpet on stairs, but then would have to do the entire upstairs hall as well.
