What's the best small guest bedroom extra: an upholstered seat, a desk and chair, or a dresser?

It drives me nuts when I visit somewhere for any length of time and can't put my clothes away properly. My favorite B&B has an empty closet, with sufficient hangers, and a narrow shelf with rattan baskets for small stuff and stacking things. The luggage fits in the closet. If small space is a consideration, I would say my number 1 suggestion is work on the closet. If the closet is insufficient you need the dresser. A chair is a nicety but not necessary. A desk isn't usually needed...everyone has an iPad or laptop that can be used anywhere. Definitely need room for a nightstand with lamp.

seat. most guests don't need private space to work or store clothes for a long stay.

The upholstered seat is probably the most useful.

A place to put luggage, like a bench or chair, to pack/unpack is nice. I added a bench at the foot of the bed as well as a chair for particular frequent visitors with lot of luggage.
I also cleaned out the closet of my stuff so it could be used.

A good reading lamp, a place for my suitcase to unpack, a a nice basket with toiletries and a couple of magazines with the guests interests in mind. My guests love all those things and we have a cappucino machine in our guest room that they all love.

I second the reading lamp and place to put suitcase. I frequently have to look around the room for books or something to put under a small bedside light to raise it up high enough to read in bed when I visit people. The light needs to be tall enough to come over your shoulder.

A usable closet/wardrobe is my no. 1 priority. I can't stand living out of the suitcase, whether for an overnight or prolonged stay. I actually prefer european style armoires that provide a hanging rod, shelves and drawers. If organizing american closet, make sure there's a shelve over the rod. Add a couple of baskets for underwear and random items, or put a small drawers unit below the hanging rod. Make sure there are enough hangers for clothes.
