Needs ideas for flowering vines in hanging baskets. Help!

Hello,

I'm trying to find some options for some flowering plants for hanging baskets. I'd like the plant to cascade over the sides of the basket and have attractive flowers that last for as long as possible. Fragrance is very important for me as I intend for them to supplement my butterfly garden. I have 3 mature Passion Flowers vines that have attracted several species of butterfly (though they've never produced fruit as I expected them to - if you've any idea why that is so I'd like to know that, too). Sadly, to make way for an addition to our garage they will have to go, along with most of my butterfly garden. If passion flowers can be done in hanging baskets, I'd be thrilled. I'd like several options, though - as many as you can give me, actually. I am in zone 8 - south Louisiana.

Pan, not particularly scented as I recall, but a great butterfly plant would be Mexican flame vine, or Pseudogynoxus chenopodioides. Invasive in some places, it might not be so bad where you are. Features orange daisy-like flowers with yellow centers. As a vine, I've never seen anything quite like it. I'm sure there are other, better ideas, but just to get your ball rolling, thought I'd mention this one.

I bought a beautiful Bougainville today. I'm going to train it on a trellis but I read it would be great for hanging basket. I too have a butterfly garden in front and am starting one in back this weekend. I'm considering Passion vine. I love it. Are there any cons with this vine?

I can't see a Bougainvillea lasting long in a hanging basket. I think you'll need to consider it strictly temporary. It wants to be a large woody climber. Passion vines can also grow enormous so again it would be a temporary resident in a basket. Baskets contain even less soil than a decent container so they require frequent watering.

If one Googles 'trailing plants for hanging baskets', or similar wording, you'll find a lot of suggestions.
