I would hate to be whosever's rear end at Target!

New textiles. So sorry. Not funny.

These are Target Threshold. Several months old. I have never used chlorine bleach on these and had nothing on myself that could have done this and yes my sheets get washed by themselves. I made the bed last night and woke up this morning to this. I have 6 sets of these and this is the only set to date that I have a problem with.

Of course I threw the packaging out so I stopped at Target this morning and picked up a new set so I'd have the packaging. No I don't feel ashamed to do this regardless I paid for these and I want them replaced.

Roc..your right new textiles....I have sheets 50&60 years old that have been bleached and yet are still in mint condition. Grr

Jean, lol..I'll be friendly and respectfull when I return these, after all its not their fault lol. But it sure isn't mine either..hell my warewolf lover isn't even in town this week.

I have seen this before. Very dry and rough heels or not groomed toenails will do this to sheets in a matter of months, regardless of sheet cost and quality!!

I swear the best sheets are the ones I find at estate sales (in their original packages, frequently.) They just don't make 'em like they used to and it's maddening!

We purchased the top of the line sheets (400 true thread count) from Costco. They were not made in China. Now all their sheets are. Even so one of the top edges frayed from use and cleaning after about 5 years. I believe high thread count means finer thread and less wear ability. I am not fond of Target linens. Prefer Costco or J. C. Penny for that sort of thing, but I never trust anything that is made in China.

I will NOT buy sheets, cookware, appliances, plates, glasses, cutlery, storage containers, etc from China. I do not trust them at all!!!!

If you all knew the amount of time and energy I have put into making sure everything in the house is from USA, Germany, France, Canada, Japan, Oceania, Northern Europe.......Exhausting. But so worth it, in my opinion!!

@pink - the quality of linen these days is poor, clothing included. It is very difficult to find made in the USA goods. I have to agree with Larsi, but it's impractical and too expensive for most of us. I really have had excellent luck with SAMs Club sheets. They truly have sold this country to China some years ago. Everything from textiles, carpet, linen, clothing, housewares, appliances, China and the lackluster quality shows.

Funny you should mention it. Our 2 day old Threshold sheets looked like that. I blamed the dog as one of her paws was quite sharp. It was the flat sheet so we thought she snagged it with her paw. Had my wife put a quick stitch in it to hold it together.

Guess it is poor quality. IIRC our set was made in India.

First..lol..not from feet..it was up by Mamas, ummm..boobs..and believe me no sharp edges there, besides my nails are trimed and my feet soft..lol..but speaking of feet and boobs...did you know I can get a mamogram and a pedicure at the same time LOL.

There's actually 5 of these tears all lined up..now I did get a new 3 inch memory foam topper but went over it and could find nothing sharp and the quilted matteress cover is not torn. I really like these Threshold sheets, what a shame because I don't know if I'll buy more.

Nerdy are the Costco sheets made in the US? Are any sheets made in the US? I don't have a Costco anyway.

Textiles just are not made like they used to be, what a shame. Years ago you could get a set from the 5&dime or woolworths and they would last forever, now forget it. As far as Pennys Bon Ton and Sears...I don't like any they sell.

Veda, yes your right the best sheets come from estate sales..but I'm in a country town so I often find sheets from the 70's in thrift stores, yes used but don't doubt for a second I can't debug and disinfect them as if they are new LOL. I will return these sheets, I could mend them but most of you know how picky I am about bedding, I can sleep on an old sheet after I de-germ it lol but I won't sleep on a sheet that been mended. There's nothing wrong with mending a sheet, I'm just extremely picky about bedding. Thanks everyone. LOL

I read a review on sheets a few years ago with some of the same information. They were warning that you could not trust the thread count because of the practice of twisting 2 or 3 threads together and claiming each thread as the thread count. That multiplies the actual product of warf and web counts by factors of 2 or 3. The sheets I bought from Costco were named as not doing that so I got an authentic 400 thread count. I believe they were made in India, not China. The replacement sheets they are selling now are made in China, if I recall.

SAMs Club made in India marketed by Vindido. Flexi Fit US patent as labeled on product. I have sets that are 3 years old that have stood up to the rigors and high temp washing and chlorine bleach on a weekly basis with no signs of wear. I highly recommend them for the price.

I like facts as they are useful for understanding what I am buying. It took me a very long time to find an explanation about the sheets because sheets have not been manufactured in this country for so many years.

The shame of it is that America can grow the finest cotton in the world. And the higher grades of our cotton were used for those 70s and 80s sheets and towels which is why my old towels can be washed and still dry out soft without FS while new ones washed in the same load turn to sandpaper.

No one can tell from a package whether sheets will be good or not. They play tricks with the finishing too. So only after multiple washing and use do you know. As we've seen with pinky's.

Roc, your a dictionary of knowledge when it comes to textiles, I appricate you. For the longest time I only used my old sheets but so many of them are prints and I personally prefer white, but I'd still rather have a old sheet with that smooth feel in a print than white that feels crappy...

Rococo, does the sateen sheet weave, you mention above in the 4:1 ratio, mean that there are 4 warp threads to each weft, or the reverse? Thanks for your textile expertise :)

No, enduring.

The style of weave -- i.e. percale or sateen or jacquard -- is one thing.

With weaving the warp threads are stationary. There is a certain number. Let's say 100. The weft thread, that goes across, is how the fabric is made to grow. If there is 1 weft thread, the shuttle passes between the warps. For sateen, the pass is 4 under, 1 over, 4 under. For percale it is 1 over 1 under.

Say you have a mill that is selling to mass marketers and needs to create sheeting cheaply. They have 100 warp threads on the loom. But instead of using a 1 weft thread each time the shuttle goes across (an insertion), they get more goods in the same time if they go with 3 weft threads (3 insertions). So you have a 300 thread count sheet. But it's not as strong as a the first sheet because the weave is not as even. Thing is, the thread is super fine so this isn't always visible. It may require a technical test to determine how unevenly the fabric is woven. It doesn't matter whether it's a percale or sateen weave -- can be done with either.

Say they want to really pump out the fabric for the Target sateen sheets and are using -- for argument sake -- 6 weft threads in a bundle woven 4 under, 1 over, 4 under each single warp thread. Then apply friction. The single warp threads wear and fail but there are plenty of weft threads left in the gash.

Problem is the weave is one thing. Cotton quality is another. That can determine the sturdiness of the sheet as well. The longer the cotton fiber the stronger. So Egyptian (real Egyptian -- hard to know what that really is), Pima, Supima (brand) are long fibers. If woven without too many insertions, that gives the highest quality sheets. Shorter cotton has little ends that stick up when the yarn is spun. On those sheets, with the lower quality cotton, they compensate with finishing processes to make sheets feel smooth.

That's why you can't tell what you're buying -- no matter the price -- until the sheets have been washed many times.

thanks Rococo, I was thinking that the sateen would be skipping over multiples of warp, and that is what you described. then the next row, starting maybe over one warp thread, before starting the 4/1/4 series. I just didn't know for sure, because the 4 over and 1 under could be built the other way too, I would think. I haven't done any weaving since high school, over 45 years ago. But I tried many types of stitches on my sample. It was a lot of fun.

Regarding the use of 3 or more threads with each shuttle pass, to get the thread count up, that is something I only learned recently. I may have read it here in the laundry forum in the past several years, and could have been from a post of yours. Thanks for all your expertise. Fabrics are wonderful!

Mamapinky, that could have been a photo of my top sheet if it was in light blue (also Target Threshold!). I don't use bleach either, and always line dry because we don't have a dryer. What the heck happened to Target sheets?

I was spending a few hours online looking at Lands End, Vermont Country Store, The Company Store, Amazon etc. for a replacement that wasn't going to break the bank, and I was so happy I found this thread (okay, that was punny!). Recently purchased Threshold sheets from Target. Washed them in cold water before putting on the bed. Afterwards I kept smelling this smell and discovered it was the sheets. They literally smelled like onions. Even made my linen closet smell when other sheets were on the bed. I'm sure it's some kind of chemical. Will never purchase Threshold sheets again.

Try washing the sheets in hot water before you give up on them. Sheets should be washed in hot water anyway to get the body oils out.

Yes, hot water, Borax. Hang outdoors in the sun to dry.

It’s because of her I have my huge stash of laundry products and enjoy the hunt for something new to try. Remember her talking about taking over her husbands closet for her stash?? Just cleaned it out one day while he was at work.

I remember that she liked Target's Shabby Chic sheets much better than the Threshold and I agree.

What sheets are the most reccomended? we have an airbnb and my husband likes the cotton ones that are thicker and soft. i want some that doesnt wrinkle too much. PLEASE HELP!! Thank You!
