Is the paper shiny plastic-coated like Contact? Or is it smooth and papery? Old vinyl Contact paper can often be removed more easily by blowing hot air from a hair dryer on it to soften the adhesive.

For a novice, I'd recommend starting by removing the wallpaper border above the cabinets. It'll be good experience. Lots of instructions on the internet on how to remove wallpaper.

For the door paper, start on an unobtrusive cabinet door, such as a bottom cabinet or the cabinet over the fridge.

Since it's over painted wood, it should be quite easy to remove. Score it with a tool called a paper tiger (you can pick one up in any home improvement store). Spray with a 1/2 and 1/2 mixture of fabric softener and hot water. Let it sit a bit and it should come straight off with a wide putty knife. I used this method to remove a wallpaper border in my living room and it was quite easy. Hope this helps!

Try the easy things first. Lift up the paper on an edge with your fingernail. Maybe it will come off with one pull (that's called "strippable paper"). See if dabbing a wet sponge on it softens it up in 20 minutes or if you have to go with a fancier solution of soapy water. Time and water to dissolve the glue are key. Fabric softener and soap keep the paper wet by reducing evaporation . They also reduce the surface tension.
