Hi Miranda, organization is key to avoid clutter in small spaces. Best advice is to purge anything you don't regularly use. Then take a look at various closet organizers and some key storage items for the room. There are pros to help at all the home centers. Take a trip into one.

Miranda, a few questions which will help us guide you through this...What are the functions that this room must serve? Is this a home office for bills and such, or do you work from home? Is it a workspace for one or 2 people? Is this your only place to watch tv? Is the closet overflow from a bedroom closet? Can you roughly sketch out the floor plan including the windows, door and closet placement?

Cheers for recognizing you have a problem and putting yourself out there to ask for help. Many posters come on Houzz asking for decorating tips when the real problem is clutter that they can't even see right in front of them because they've been living with it so long. So you're a step ahead of many folks. Before people can weigh in, please answer rocketjcat's questions one by one. And stand in the entryway and take a photo so we can see the other side of the room, other doorways, etc.

I'd like to ask an additional question: do you have any budget to buy Ikea-style home office shelves, desktops, and cabinets? I can certainly envision combining a smooth system of bookshelves, desktops, and cabinets under the window and along the wall where your TV to replace your mish mash of small units and shelves. But this can only come after a serious purging of so much clutter. Here's an article on how to start. There are many others on Houzz.

We really do need to see all four walls of the room and learn what the function of the room is before offering serious ideas. But here are some very quick thoughts:

--Relocate the chest that practically blocks the doorway to the almost empty wall right by the door. Right now, I'm not sure how you can even open the door. A good design principle is to create an open path into a room while having a landing spot by the door for keys, mail, etc. So just move that chest right now. The room will look bigger when you enter it.

--Buy a Britta pitcher and refills so you never have to store all that bottled water. There. You've regained a square foot or two of storage space in that closet area.

--Buy microfiber cloths like Trader Joe's Amazing Kitchen Cloths so you don't have to store so many paper towel rolls. It's good for the environment and good for you. Every time you do laundry, throw the currently used cloth in the washing machine. Now you've regained another square foot of space in the closet.

Okay, you've gained some yardage in the closet. Take all your handbags off the front door. Line them up on the shelves where you were keeping the water and extra paper towels. Don't hang anything on the front door. With the chest moved and a bowl or basket on top for your keys and mail, you have a small, organised space in that corner of the room.

I could go on, but you really need to give us a four-wall view of the room with more photos and let us know the dimensions, use of the room, etc.

    The computer area:

One long counter with a shelf 6"-12" above it would give it a cleaner look and give you more space. Put the couch and television somewhere else or get rid of them if you can. It's just too much in that room. If you need comfort there, pick up some very comfortable office chairs. Electrical wires can be concealed with wire concealers. Just google 'conceal electrical wires' and some choices will pop up.

If it is not possible to get rid of the couch because you sleep on it, consider a single lateral murphy bed. If you watch TV in bed, consider a smaller tv that is hung from the ceiling and that faces the length of the bed instead of it being placed on the wall beside the bed. It will be more comfortable to watch.

Consider replacing the drawer unit at the end of the couch and the unit along the window wall with one tall shelving unit with doors at the end of the couch to give a more spacious feel.

    The closet:

Shelves with wicker bins on the wall opposite the hanging clothes would give you some more space. Try to organize the stuff by the way you use it--1) paper towels, water, dishes?, hot chocolate are kitchen items. 2) clothing items in bins together 3) Toiletries in bins together, etc. You will find it easier to locate items when you need them.

The pocket books could come off the door and hang on S hooks that hang from the currently empty rod.

Wicker bins on the shelves above the clothes would tidy this up too.

    Other:

The air conditioning unit(?) is an eyesore isn't it? It could be a little less so if the hoses going through the window could go be placed lower.

    I hope this helps.

Take everything out and then organize and purge what you took out and put back only organized things you want to keep and they must have a proper home such as storage boxes, file cabinets, shelves . This space needs serious decluttering and that is how I would do it. If the room has to be multi purpose that’s the way it is but it can be organized.
