Help with backsplash for basement bar.

I'm looking for some help in picking a backsplash for our basement bar area. Looking for lighter options because cabinets are expresso and countertop is dark. I wanted a lighter countertop but DH wanted dark and some battles you just give up on!!!!!!

We have a walkout basement so there is a lot of light. I have attached a picture with 3 samples but am having problems taking picture without glare. #1 is on biege side, #2 is cream and #3 is on Gray side. If these don't work please feel free to make other suggestions. The fridge/stove will be changed to stainless down the road. Thanks for all your help.

There are flecks of gray and cream in granite but kind of hard to see in picture.

So hard to get the true colour of the tiles.

Love these black and gray linear tiles!

zzmom the picture you show has a white countertop and mine is dark, do you not think a dark tile will be too dark?

I would go with pearly white mosaic glass tiles to bring in the light.

Is the tile going on left wall in addition to the back wall?

The tile will be going beside the fridge to the cabinet with the wine rack and tile under the top counter which is 4 inches. I will take a picture and post.

Here are a few pictures showing area where the tile will go.

I think #1 is the best choice, especially if you are keeping the wall color.

I actually think it will look even better with your dark counters..I say do something different to really pump up the entertainment bar feel. I really think it would be sharp...I guarantee everyone will comment on it because you stepped out of the box..that is what design is all about! Have fun

acm- Paint colour is Bronco Gray by para. It looks yellowish in the picture but really is not. I wasn't planning on painting but may in a couple of years.

Tks zzmom. I was so upset about the dark counter that I am so afraid to do a dark backsplash.

Since you are only doing the back wall, consider a mosaic with black and stainless steel -or- primarily stainless steel. A plain cream or light gray would seem as out of place as the white appliances do now.

Definitely not 2or3. Have you considered you floor tile, at least it looks like tile. I would go with a stacked stone look that is creamy tone, to go with floor and blends with the counter . It also would add some texture to balance off of all the dark, shiny and new. Also change out the white switch plates or paint them.. And to be really honest, the art work is not in keeping with the feel of the space. And it is a lovely space. Add a bowl of lemons and limes, needs color and garnish or a twist.

jIllian- yes I know the fridge/ stove sticks out like a sore thumb. We bought the fridge about 5 years ago for an extra fridge not planning on putting the bar in. When we decided to start the bar my husband thought it would be a good idea to also put stove in, so when we bought new stainless stove for our kitchen and we moved the white stove downstairs. The intent is to change out both to stainless at some point. That is the reason that I wanted a lighter countertop because I told him that the white appliances wouldn't look good with dark cabinetry and dark countertop. But I guess my question is you said the light gray and beige would not look good because of the white appliances but yet people are putting in white and dark cabinetry and that seems to be acceptable. Whew.....long winded explanation. Does my question make sense?

Carolyn - yes that picture does not go... I actually hate it but my husband bought it from a local painter and thinks it's nice. Yes I also need to incorporate some colour but I haven't got to that stage yet. Are you thinking tumbled marble type of stone. I'm so confused because I have seen on this site so many comments about backsplashs being too busy with granite that in my mind I thinking I need to put in subway tile.

Tina, now I'm unsure. Kind of. I'm pretty sure you shouldn't do dark. With dark cabinets and dark counters , it could turn into a dark block of ..... Can't think of a good metaphor. Texture with texture could be busy, hence the bringing samples home. Drive the sales people crazy, it's ok. Think wall and floor color, it's already there with the counter. Just do something with some texture or worn looking. It's all so shiny and new. Lovely, but it needs a different note. I tend to ramble. Tumbled marble, hand crafted tiles, stacked stone with brick like, raw irregular edges. Color whatever works.

I would lean towards a lighter gray tile. I think it would blend better with your gray walls and the grays in your countertop. I even say this despite not being a big fan of gray!

I think you should go with the light gray option, #3. I am a fan of bright and fresh kitchens and think the contrast will work nicely with what you already have going on.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I was originally leaning toward the gray but I think I will go and look for more samples of some type of stone (tumbled marble or similar) and stainless. When I brought the granite sample to the tile stores they suggested more gray than beige because then you have more option down the road, but it will have to be the right shade of gray. My husband likes the idea of stainless however I thought because of the white fridge it was not going to look good. I do plan on putting stainless/brushed nickle handles on.

ACM thought #1 (beige tone tile) looked better because of my wall colour but I can change that if need to. Probably need to find the best look then decide if I need to paint.

Can tile be photoshopped to get an idea of what it would look like? That would be super helpful.

Pick the tile so that when you do replace the appliances it will be beautiful...don't base your choice on appliance that are not staying for the long haul! Stainless and deep gray would look gorgeous!

I thought this was a bar area in a basement...right? I would not treat it as a upstairs kitchen it just won't give the right vibe needed for a downstairs entertainment area.
Tks zzmom. Yes this is a bar area and I do agree I have to ignore the white fridge/stove. Also as previously mentioned I will ignore the wall colour and repaint if I need to. There is also a slab of granite on the bottom step of the bar (where your feet would rest).....in hindsight if a lighter granite was selected that would of been more noticeable.
