mean where to cut the "rug"

I think it would look rather glorious if the rug went all the way from one end to the other(to fireplace) though that's not what you asked.

love your place! Big rugs are expensive and hard to find-- I hate the thought of cutting it if you don't have to. Have you tried turning it the other way? How does it look if you move the sofa and table back just a little bit?

or pulling the rug away from the wall and moving it out more to the center?

Can you start it under the coffee table and extend it under the chairs by the fireplace?

Bring the rug out from the tv toward the fireplace so that the coffee table is well on the rug, remove the sofa table, place the two chairs with at least the back legs on the rug and angled slightly toward the fireplace, put a round table between the chairs. Your space is beautiful and I'm in love with the drapes and fireplace!

Lisa pay8...I tried the other way but it is slightly longer than the width of that space...

most of ypu seem to think I should move the rug closer, I used the tape measure on the floor to mark where the rug would move to, along with removing the table. I only get another 10 inches. do you think I should combine the space, I was originally treating as 2 seating areas.

remove the rug from under the buffet ,pull it and place the 2 chairs on top of it , no need to cut the rug .

I would definitely make that one space (unless your guests are okay with kneeling on the couch to see the fire). Leave the TV on the wall it's on now, center the rug in the space. Rearrange the seating. The space isn't so large that you can really split it in two; right now you can have either two or three people in the room, but never any more.

Combine the spaces and center the rug. the two chairs are dwarfed by the fireplace anyway. One of the pieces should face that fabulous view, also.

I think it is fine the way it is positioned now.

Could you tell us how tall is your ceiling please?

MK the ceilings are 12 ft high

I could see an identical sofa, place them back to back. You would have the television viewing area and the fireplace area.

so everyone agrees not to cut the rug under the sofa though....it would be too short. do we think that it's not long enough though to reach a good distance from the FP?

I really like the two distinct areas for this large room and it makes for a more unusual room. I do find the tv/coffee table/couch feel squeezed in and couch very close to the large tv. You'll be accomplishing two things (rug problem and seating area cramping) if you move the console back so it's just a couple of inches from the edge of the rug and then move the couch and coffee table back appropriately. Place the chairs facing each other and a small table in the middle for snacks/drinks to be placed on and a floor lamp behind the chair near window for a great reading spot. When you have company and need extra seating, you could place the chairs facing each other from across the coffee table and the space near fireplace won't be as large and feel too empty.

I think Beverly has the ALMOST perfect solution. In her plan, I'd flip sofa and chairs so sofa faces the window. Chairs in front of the window will obscure the view less.

Just move the tv!

Glorious space! I agree with Beverly and Axlegrover, sofa facing the Windows, chairs at the windows. If you think this is uncomfortable for tv viewing, move the tv to over the fireplace, and turn the sofa to face it.

I think the space seems rather long for that arrangement, lots of empty space on the sides...no? And less comfortable tv viewing.

my husband like to face the TV directly, which is why we went this route. he isn't a fan of putting TVS over fireplaces. also, the wall facing the window is pretty short
