We have a mature Loquat tree that our cat has begun using as his scratching post. The grey trunk has revealed its orange innards. I wrapped the trunk with a cork sheet. We watched the cat go up to the tree, observe the cork, then he looked at us....and started scratching the roots! Cats!

Is our tree in danger? Is it better to let him scratch the trunk rather than the roots? I tried putting cinnamon on the "wounded" roots but that did not deter him. I don't want to use pepper as he is our beloved pet of 12 years.

What can we do?
