Fabric to make a flat sheet?

Hi, everyone,

I've been so very frustrated trying to find a decent king size flat sheet to replace the one that shredded like on this thread: mama pinky's post here

I've been using an old sheet from my double-bed days, because it's sturdy and it sorta works for where I sleep in the king size bed. I'd love to find a decent priced Egyptian cotton sheet, or a sturdy cotton sheet, made in Portugal or Italy or even our very own USA, but that's just not happening. I've checked Amazon, ebay, Vermont Country Store, Land's End, HSN, QVC, etc etc. Bupkis for what I want, and for what I want to pay, and for the terrible reviews.

(sigh) The price of king size flat sheets is staggering to me, so I thought, well, I can sew, and I don't mind a seam in the middle either.

I looked online at Hancock, Joann's, and Hobby Lobby and some fancier fabric places.

Does anyone know where I can get decent fabric for this project? We don't have a dryer and always line dry everything outside, and wrinkles are not an issue.

Thanks in advance!

Smiles,

Sooz

    Hi Sooz,

What about rough linen website? Is it that you want a light sheet or something heavier? https://www.roughlinen.com

Have you seen hankerchief linen? It's very light, 54" wide and washable. It has a very nice, light hand and is often used in fine fashion and heirloom sewing. There is batiste, very light and soft, comes in a poly blend and 100% cotton $$$.

Perhaps if you visit a quilting shop you might find a quality cotton, like Moda. That manufacturer has very nice cottons that wash and dry well. Check your area for heirloom sewing, fashion sewing and quilting. I apologize if I have completely missed your point.

Some online quilt shops might have a swatch service. They will send you a small square of fabric so you can feel it. This service does cost but that way you can get a larger sampling before you commit.

Wow, what wonderful info, meyerk9 -- thank you!!!

I just visited the roughlinen website and almost fainted when I saw the prices. Beautiful and lovely, to be sure, but a bit out of my price range.

I do want a medium to light sheet, that wears well and won't fall apart within a few years!

There is a quilting shop "down the street and around the corner" and will visit them too! Thanks for the recommendation about quality cotton like Moda.

You're going to have a hard time finding fabric that wide. A quick search for cotton sheeting by the yard turned up this place: http://organiccottonplus.com/collections/wovens-sateen-percale-sheeting.

What came to mind almost immediately was: Bed Bath and Beyond, and their coupons. Save them when you see them in the mail, email, etc. Like cit3, though, I agree that you're going to have a hard time finding fabric that wide and for a reasonable price.

Many quilt shops have backing fabric which is usually 108 inches wide, wide enough for a king bed. If you're in a quilt shop, inquire about it.

I just bought a set of Peacock Alley King sheets on Overstock. Their prices seem to fluctuate based on stock. I paid ~$55 for the first set and about ~$65 for the second set a couple of weeks later. I see they are up to $75 now, but that is still not a bad price for a nice set of sheets. I like them because they are percale, not sateen, and are crisp.

Thanks everyone! I ended up getting a 500 TC flat King sheet, 100% (pima) cotton, made in Portugal, from eBay. VERY nice sheet, tightly woven (cannot see through it!), feels "medium heavy" to me, which is just what I wanted, for $32 plus shipping.

Hi Sooz, I am in the market for a similar sheet. Can you please share the seller? Thanks!
