Start with a good size area rug...choose something with a pattern and some color....don't be bound by blue if something else really catches your eye....this will start you on your way to giving your room some personality and an inspiration piece for adding color to accessories and decor..to enhance the function of the room look for end tables that are the right size and height to use while in the seating...and decide if a big ottoman or a coffee table will serve your needs best while watching tv...you have a clean slate so far to choose what ever style appeals to you for the rug and tables..at this point you can decide if you still want a accent wall with some color to brighten up the room...and also check out Houzz photos to refine your choices...perhaps "TV rooms" in the photo section will provide some inspiration

Rugs are the most difficult thing to find ...especially if you are looking for a certain color ...also quality really matters as it is such a big statement piece in the room...if price is an issue try finding a good consignment store for a used rug..many times you will find a rug that will retail for thousands ....priced in the hundreds...good rugs last but do not need to be purchased new..and real quality old rugs are timeless and less trendy

There is no reason to be bound to the accent colors in the kitchen and if you choose something you love personally it usually goes together and is a real expression of your personal taste

The best rooms are done in layers..each layer chosen carefully with thought to your personal tastes and what pleases your eye and how you feel when viewing the room

The rug you show is an excellent choice if the quality is nice and it suggests your taste for the more elegant and understated...also it still leaves an opening for adding a pale color influence to the walls

I need a visual sample pertaining to my room. There are so many pictures I like, but wonder how will my room look like.

This is a great room to work with. The color of the walls is a nice gray neutral. I would add a rug with the same blue in it as in the kitchen. Not all blue but touches of blue. Then add a throw pillow, Vase, or artwork to carry bits of blue through out the room. You can also add another complimentary color in small doses...yellow or orange mixed with the blue in the throw pillows or even in the rug. That ties the room together.

Your #1 priority is the furniture arrangement. Make sure that all the furniture is where it should be in the room. Your TV console is long enough, but way to short. You need something that will hold it's own against that big TV.

Get a sofa table for behind sofa and add some interest to the area. A rug and some floor lighting. Coffee table? End table?

Get the furniture pieces before you worry about a rug and curtains. This room needs to be finished. The leather is neutral, so consider a wood or fabric ottoman/coffee table

A floor lamp in corner and a table and lamp by chair.

Susan2494, that picture helps to visualize. Adding table for behind sofa to my list. Anything else, other than those built in looking shelves? My husband hates that look, as it reminds him of those old entertainment centers he had growing up. =)

I am not a fan of those either :>), but just used to show that you need something taller for under TV. Let me see if I can find a console that is long enough, but taller to accommodate that TV.

oh no~~ that console stays. I spent days looking for something that my husband and I agree on, and this one was the one. Maybe plants or something that can be put on top, around or above? What do you think?

Possibly small consoles under art work on either side of tv console, but your console might be wide enough.

Feature wall behind TV done in dark Wood, but you could easily paint out the wall behind the TV in dark brown to blend the business of the wall items and add contrast and depth to the room.

Your blue accent color is found in three places inthe room; a lamp shade or lamp, the upholstered benches, and a few pillows on the sofas.

If you copy these elements in YOUR taste, you will have a finished room that suits you and your family. Keep to the basics as shown but in your own interpretation of them. Have fun.

What about bringing in some larger house plants into the mix? This could help tone down all the dark colors (with the furniture and flooring) and you could also integrate blue into the vases too. Maybe something like...

It looks like you've got two french doors that lead to a patio perhaps, and bringing some plants into the room will help with the transition between the two environments. My suggestion would be to pick plants that go with the landscape that you live in so that it all flows nicely. Best of luck!

I like your console under your TV also but the TV is way too high...if you could lower your TV, pull in the plant and vase close...that is all you need for that wall. A rug with blues and yellows in it and the same colors for sofa pillows, a small round end table with lamp and a coffee table....maybe a round glass one. Not sure about curtains for the french door....maybe not.... Will be a pretty room.

Susan, that wall with lowered TV looks so much better. I Didn't realize it will make such a big difference.

erinsean, I killed the plant and the vase was moved to the dining room console. =) But i'll be getting a larger plant (maybe fake) and a blue vase.

Kelly, I agree that larger plants do look better. Do you know any that are VERY low maintenance? I just killed peace lily, that supposed to be one of the easiest to care.

I would start with a light color rug to lighten up the space with the black furniture and the dark wood floors. It doesn't have to be blue, but something that works well with blue (beige, creams, etc). Then I'd accessorize with various colors of blue - pillows, curtains, artwork, etc. A big blue rug will visually take over the room.

I think the TV is at a good height. To bring out some of the blue accents you are thinking about, how about some wall decals from your husband's favorite sports team? Did he go to Berkeley? If so, their team colors have a great shade of blue as part of the school's colors. What you should also add is an automated massage chair to fill in the open area near your sliding glass door. Panasonic makes some excellent ones. The console does seem to be missing something, like a Playstation 4. Finally, I think you might get plenty of accent lighting with something like a pinball machine. I'm no expert, mind you, so my tastes might differ slightly from others. Good luck!

Good job on the rug choice herii...it is perfect....also sounds like your color choices on the pillows is good..thought of a indestructible house plant for you that is dramatic and striking but simple...and will grow to a very good height...choose a beautiful decorative pot and only water occasionally and doesn't need a lot of light...it is called a sansevieria or snake plant...will survive months without even water

Truly ...we went away for 4 months last winter...left three of these in a window ...no water ...arrived back they were all taller... bigger ...maybe even happier than when we left...try and beat that for indestructible!

You have chosen such a pretty rug and it's going to look great in your space.
Some of us just can't keep plants alive because of light and care requirements. I have a faux Parlor Palm tree about four feet high and when it becomes dusty it is easy to spray with a hose and let it drip dry. I know the mention of a faux tree is cringe worthy to some but....it works for me, requires no care and brightens a dim corner.

Here are better pictures of the room. Do you think 2 smaller frames with art, or one big one would look better on the wall above sofa?

Susan, I'm planning too. I'm going make up my mind after room is done. It looks better lowered, but it's more practical to have it as it is now, because I often watch it while cooking.

Glad to hear you are going to quit cooking after you lower it. You need a break.

Herii...think about just centering the tv on the wall..unless you are very short ...that should be a good compromise...and also will still cover up any wall evidence of the change

I think turquoise pillows behind smaller Aqua pillows will look great. It will tie in the blue in The kitchen. Without being a replica and too matchy matchy. Great rug!

Sorry just attaching pillow pics now. There are a ton of thee on etsy and reasonable priced too. Just buy the pillow form like (18x18 for the back pillow and much smaller for the front pillow) at a sewing shop and then cover w these pillow covers... also i think adding a bit of yellow will make things interesting. Like ONE yellow thing though. Maybe a throw?
