What to do with our couches? Recover and/or replace

Our living room is our last frontier design-wise in our much-loved apartment. My boyfriend has a beloved and very comfortable love-seat that desperately needs to be recovered (If i replace it it will break his heart); but I have no idea what colour and fabric would look good on the couch and with the room.

Our other coach (the chaise-sectional) was bought second-hand for our old apartment when we needed a sofa-bed for guests (neither of us are particularly attached to it). For the sectional, I'm debating replacing it, recovering it, or picking a style for the love-seat that will complement the current style. Any ideas on colour, fabric, arrangement? Down the road I'll be keeping an eye out for better options for a coffee table, tv stand etc.

The wall colour is Behr Coconut Twist and the hallway behind the living room is painted Behr Tsunami (it looks much more like navy blue in our hallway than it does on the computer screen)

FYI The living room doubles as a hallway from the front to the back of the apartment so we're a bit restricted in terms of furniture placement and I'm wary of adding a rug with the high traffic.

If you haven't sewn slipcovers before, you might check out some of the online courses available. The ones that I've taken have been through Craftsy, which I've found to be a very usable platform with responsive instructors.

BTW, your sectional is very neutral. Unless there is major wear that I can't see, I'd just leave it for now.

I think you will find that it would be $$$ to reupholster this loveseat. You would probably be better off purchasing a new piece. If that's not in your budget, how about a ready-made slipcover?

Yes if you go to get an estimate to reupholster your couch, you will be very surprised by the number they give you. It is often way more expensive re upholster, especially with a project that size, than to buy new. I understand what your boyfriend is feeling but sometimes you just have to let go!

Thanks @my1gmail! I agree! I'm reasonably skilled at sewing so I've been considering making a slipcover myself or doing the upholstery myself. We have an old chair that we're going to start with to get a feel for whether we're capable of moving onto the couch.

Its a well-made, comfortable love-seat so while re-upholstering it is probably outside my budget, I'm wondering whether I'll just end up spending money on a lower quality couch if i replace it.

A slip cover is probably your best bet then. You will definitely be getting a lower quality couch if you replace it. If you love it, and have sewing skills, go for the DIY slipcover and throw some nice pillows on the couch for some interest!

Thanks for the encouragement! Any thoughts on colours? I'm really struggling to picture what kind of fabric and colour will pull the room together. I'm thinking a light grey or blue linen-style blend could look very cosy on the love seat but then I'm not sure what to do with the sectional.
