Our kitchen

Our home is saturated with brown... Brown floors, brown cabinets, brown doors, etc... I would like to update the look of our kitchen by painting our cabinets, changing out the knobs/pulls, and replacing the backsplash and countertops. What do you think about gray/beige "greige" paint color? We are also looking to remodel the attached family room. I'd like to rip out the built-ins and replace with windows to bring in some much needed light. What are your suggestions about placement? I have considered large windows on each side of the fireplace with window seats below. Any other ideas/suggestions? TIA!!

Actually. I would pull out a color from your granite to paint the cabinets. What style are you looking to update to? If you want more transitional modern, contemplate dark cabinets, even black. I would also replace the vent hood if you are tired of the country French look. By making those changes along with the backsplash and knobs, you will have a whole new look without a bunch of $$ being spent.

Removing the fireplace builtins is a great idea. I would hold off on painting the cabinets though especially if you're keeping the backsplash.

I agree - I would not paint the cabinets, but I would replace the backsplash and remove the corbels under the range hood and the wood applique on the front. This beveled glass backsplash would be very pretty and lighten things up. Another option would be to just paint the uppers. I would, however, remove the built-ins at the fireplace. I love the idea of window seats on either side. They can be built to include storage if needed.

I feel like we're missing something -- why do you want to replace your counters? They seem fine and like they would go with your new color scheme -- you could paint cream or greige and then pick the other color for a backsplash. Should feel like a whole new kitchen with that and pulls. If they're plastic or something, then I guess you're starting from scratch and could do just about anything!

Not sure why you would paint those lovely cabinets, it seems such a shame. The only things that stand out to me in your kitchen to update are the backsplash (I am actually OK with it but it is busy) and the wood embellishment on the hood. I like the granite and it seems pretty neutral to work with. I do think your fireplace and cabinets need some attention. If it were me, I would re-place with built ins that incorporate the windows (like er612's last pic), and I would incorporate the TV into the built ins under the window on the side rather than have it over the fireplace - better position for viewing plus you won't obscure your lovely stone work over the fireplace. Window seats likely would never get used, I can't imagine they would be comfortable, you wouldn't be able see the TV or be part of the conversation area.

If anything paint your island. I wouldn't paint all your cabinets as they are so gorgeous!!! Having an accent island or even replacing some door with glass doors, removing the appliqué on the front of the range, changing out the backsplash for sure to a crisp subway tile that pulls in the accent island, and then either ripping out the built ins or painting them the accent island color would be great! Good luck!!!
