RE-Do on a VERY Small Budget

1990 had overstayed it's welcome. Financially unable to do a total gut of the kitchen, I tackled the sore spots. Cabinets were painted white, new counters installed. Beadboard installed on the peninsula and backsplash. New hardware and accessories. New lighting. Still tweeking a bit, but for the most part - I'm done.

@Julie : I used Rustoleum Cabinet Tranformations in Pure White on the cabinets. I did an extra step of using a kilz primer on the cabinets first to help eliminate some of the wood grain. It smoothed it out a bit. I didn't use a wood filler. Yes, there was a slight color differentiation between the appliances and the cabinets, my appliances look a little greyer, but it is very subtle. Overall, I am happy with the product, it has held up very well thru the holiday baking/cooking spree and 2 foster puppies that liked to jump up with muddy paws on the cabinets. Good luck!

This looks lovely! I, too, have the 1990's "almost orangy" oak cabinets and am getting ready to ... well, do something, not sure what yet! Sharyn - Did you have trouble dealing with the oak grain showing through? Did you use a wood filler before priming (if so, what?) Also - in more light - Is there an issue with the white appliances "clashing" with the white cabinets? I also have mostly white appliances and have been cautioned to carefully consider white cabinets because of potential "clashing" and maybe go with a soft, warm gray color instead.

Sharyn - I also used Rustoleum CT in pure white and LOVE it. I also used black on the island. Anyone looking for a budget friendly redo should look at this product.

Thank you ALL for the kind words. This was a lot of work, (I did it with minimal help from my husband) but it was so worth it. Thanks to all the Houzzer posters for answering my questions to achieve my look. Adjacent dining room is painted the same color but not accessorized yet...will post pics when done. It is just a painted box right now. Before pic and a sneak peek after posted.

What color paint did you use on top in the dining room. I'd love to do my honey oak cabinets, but I've got my hands full with wallpaper removal right now lol

Both rooms are painted with Benjamin Moore Wedgewood Grey HC-146 - shaded with more grey. I can get you the exact formula if you wish. I found the true color a bit to baby blue, and liked the grey undertones. I feel your pain regarding stripping wallpaper. I stripped 4 rooms and still have one to go. Never papering again! The dining room ceiling is painted in Benjamin Moore Atmospheric.

The bead board was on clearance at Menards for $4 a package - what a deal huh? I totally lucked out - which really kept my expenses down. The stainless steel panel behind the stove was also on markdown too.
