Hi, Rebecca. Congrats on the new baby! Wow, new baby, new house could easily become overwhelming, so relax and take it slow.

Are you saying the area with the black rug and the baby stuff is the dining area? It doesn't look big enough, plus I don't see how you can center a table under that light. How about keeping all eating activities in the kitchen and using this whole space for living and TV? Try turning the sectional 90 degrees counterclockwise so it faces the TV and sliders. Float it about 3' off the back wall and pull it further from the TV.

That will also give you more room for a coffee table and it won't look squished. Definitely go round with little ones in the house.

Rebecca, congrats on the new baby & house! You must be exhausted with all that moving. Is it possible to show us a pic of the whole living/dining area taken when standing on the stairs (up as far as possible)? There seems to be quite a bit of unused space around the patio doors.

How great! Now for a new living room! How flexible are TV connections? Is your TV the glare free kind? I would move it to the dining room wall and turn your sofa so it sits a foot away from the recessed window and a foot away from the wall. Your rug needs to be under the front 1/3 of the sofa for a more grounded look. I'd get a round upholstered storage hassock for a coffee table. You can top it with a tray of pretties when company comes, but mostly keep it clear and handy for extra toys and baby gear which will find their way here. Get matching drapes, ditching the tab tops. Look for a bit of print. Hang them floor to ceiling and get lined ones if you can afford them. With one wing of the sofa in front of that wall, you'll have a great place for a large piece of art. It can be up to 75% of that sofa wing's length. Put your table and lamps that are at the foot of the stairs in the recessed window. When you're ready for a formal dining area you can move the TV to that wall and put the dining table where it belongs. Kitchen is fine for now. I wouldn't change the table until you're ready to do up the dining room or have company over for a formal meal.

Roll up the black rug and store it under a bed for now.

You can get cord covers to install along the baseboard to hide the cable.

Rebecca, for now don't move any thing but the couch. Turn it 90 degrees so one leg faces the sliders and the other faces the TV, then pull it into the center of the room. (Move the black rug and baby stuff out of the way and pretend they're not there.) Take a photo and we can help you adjust.

Sliding door = slider. Here's a rough layout, but I don't have accurate sizes of room and furniture. Top one is without dining and bottom one is with it.

Great idea deco!. Gives the living room a more open feel with more room for kids to move around. Like the first one, with lamps/table in the window recess, making an available reading space for a bedtime story. Looks like that one would give a bit more room to place the club chair near the stairs.

Rebecca.. if you have a basement the TV cable can be extended by means of a connector that allows you to add on more cable & can be routed through under the floor to the desired location.

Have done that myself.

#1 that deco posted would work if you can reroute the TV cable & still have room for the kid/baby stuff where it is currently situated.

OK, you've got plenty of space for the sectional. I would pull it further away from the TV.

After you've rested a bit, try it the other way with its back to the sliding doors.

There are advantages and disadvantages both ways. This way gives you a view out the window, but closes off the room from the kitchen. The other way will open up the room, but give you a view of the kitchen. Only you can decide which way is more comfortable for you.

Hi Rebecca, I would recommend a soft leather top for your coffee table. Pottery Barn has a really nice option.

I know it's tempting to want everything done right now, but don't worry about nasty corners till you get the sectional placed. Once you decide how you like it best, the rest will fall into place.

Rebecca, is it possible to move the TV by using an extension for the Tv cable as I mentioned above? I think that maybe your original layout or #1 that decoenthusiaste had shown is the only way that you will be able to get any lamps near the sofa for reading in the evening.

Not sure what you mean by "it's a short thin wall".. which wall are you referring to?

So you are saying that that wall where the lamps are now is too "thin" to have the TV mounted on it?

Congratulations on the new baby and new home. Consider a nice ottoman with hidden storage for your coffee table. You don't need art or pictures around the tv, there's enough going on. As far as your dining area goes...do you need it now? Perhaps you should wait until the new baby is older as you have lots of extra baby things that are everywhere, I remember those days well. One minute you have baby stuff all over, the next thing they are in grade school. Enjoy all the fun of a young family, it goes way too quickly.

May I ask why the wall is so thin? Are there no studs in the wall?
